This paper presents the results of experimental investigations performed for now over a backward facing step using a triple split film probe. The method of using the triple split film probe to measure the velocity in the recirculation region of a backward facing step has shown to be accurate, reliable, repetitive and fast. Besides measurements of mean velocity vectors without the directional ambiguity, the method has also proven to be accurate to measure the normal and shear stresses in the recirculating flow.

Simulation of Impact Induced Damage Process in a Carbon/Epoxy Composite Beam
Bozkurt, Mirac Onur; Çöker, Demirkan; Parnas, Kemal Levend (2018-12-01)
This paper presents numerical investigation of low-velocity impact (LVI) damage process in a unidirectional [0/90]s carbon/epoxy composite beam. Numerical simulations based on finite element method are conducted in ABAQUS/Explicit. A 3D model representing LVI experiments is generated. Matrix and fiber damage mechanisms are simulated by implementation of continuum damage mechanics based composite damage model with Hashin failure initiation criteria via a user-written VUMAT subroutine. Cohesive interfaces are...
Experimental characterization of collapse-mode CMUT operation

This paper reports on the experimental characterization of collapse-mode operation of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs). CMUTs are conventionally operated by applying a direct current (DC) bias voltage less than the collapse voltage of the membrane, so that the membrane is deflected toward the bottom electrode. In the conventional regime, there is no contact between the membrane and the substrate; the maximum alternating current (AC) displacement occurs at the center of the membrane. I...
Thin film piezoelectric acoustic transducer for fully implantable cochlear implants

This paper reports the development of a single cantilever thin film PLD-PZT transducer prototype. The device was experimentally characterized by attaching it on an acoustically vibrating membrane resembling the behavior of the eardrum. Acceleration characteristic of the sensor attached on the membrane was obtained by using a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) as the output voltage was measured by an oscilloscope. A voltage output of 114 mV was obtained, when the device was excited at 110 dB Sound Pressure Level...
Collapsed regime operation of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers based on wafer-bonding technique
Huang, Y; Haeggstrom, E; Bayram, Barış; Zhuang, X; Ergun, AS; Cheng, CH; Khuri-Yakub, BT (2003-01-01)
We report experimental results from collapsed regime operation of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (cMUTs) fabricated by a wafer bonding technique. The results show that a cMUT operating in the collapsed regime produces a maximal output pressure higher than a cMUT operating in the pre-collapse regime at 90 % of its collapse voltage, 1.79 kPa/V vs. 9.72 kPa/V at 2.3 MHz. In collapsed regime operation the fractional bandwidth (pulse echo) is increased compared to that obtained in pre-collapsed ...
In-situ investigation of dynamic failure in [0(5)/90(3)](5) CFRP beams under quasi-static and low-velocity impact loadings
Bozkurt, Mirac Onur; Çöker, Demirkan (2021-03-01)
In this paper, experimental work to investigate the failure sequence in cross-ply CFRP beams under quasi-static and low-velocity impact (LVI) loadings is presented. [0(5)/90(3)](s) CFRP beams with thick clustered plies are investigated for clear observation of damage mechanisms. A non-standard LVI test setup is designed and built in order to conduct line impact experiments and to allow in-situ observation of damage evolution using a high-speed camera. Full-field strain measurement on the visible edge prior ...
