Civilization and civil engineering are intimately connected, and few animate inanimate relationships are more enduring than those between human beings and their built environment. This interactive relationship goes back thousands of years. The assessment of how a building will react to a natural disaster like an earthquake requires a detailed examination of the architectural features and engineering design. Structural damage can always be investigated after it has occurred, but the challenge is to pre-empt such damage by suitably equipping a building in advance to resist the onslaught of disaster.

The Relation between the professional culture of industrial designers and their experiences in professional life
Hatunoğlu, Doğan Can; Kaygan, Pınar; Department of Industrial Design (2019)
With the global developments in the fields of innovation and technology, the industrial design profession is continuously expanding its definition. By not only creating or enhancing products but also services, and systems; industrial design operates in mostly manufacturing related industries such as; furniture, white goods, and electronic appliances. Today, the profession’s continuously increasing importance and place in the market attract the attention of these companies. Because manufacturing companies ar...
Modelling an architectural design process
Şahinler, Kubilay; Sorguç, Arzu; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2022-2-02)
Architecture is influenced by developing technologies as well as by political, social, and economic practices. In this context, the scope of architectural service also evolves. Accordingly, different studies are carried out on the execution of the design process with different methodologies. In the building design process, various models are proposed and discussed, in which the role of the architect is questioned. In this context, this research includes a series of model suggestions aimed at making the arch...
Exploring Complex Forms in Nature Through Mathematical Modeling: A Case on Turritella Terebra
Selcuk, Semra Arslan; Sorguç, Arzu (2009-09-19)
Changing paradigm of nature-architecture relationship has being directly affected from developing science and technologies as well as from the impact of biomimetic inventions in various man made designs. Our perception of forms and structures are also shifting through use of computational techniques. From this aspect, mathematical models can be considered as the first step to analyze the complex forms and structures in nature. In this paper it is aimed to initiate a platform in architecture which will serve...
An assessment and re-identification of the rural heritage site of Santa (Dumanlı köy, Gümüşhane)
Abay, Pelin; Serin, Ufuk; Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Department of Architecture (2023-1-03)
Since the Industrial Revolution, rural landscapes, the product of the mutual relationship of human beings and nature, have witnessed a process of depopulation throughout the world for a variety of reasons. The Population Exchange between Turkey and Greece in 1923 (1923 Türkiye-Yunanistan Nüfus Mübadelesi) – one of the reasons for the depopulation of rural areas in Turkey – had major repercussions on both the immigrant Turks and emigrant Rums, as well as on the rural settlements and landscapes. These r...
A research on the design criteria of subway stations
Öztürk, Özgür; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2020-10-30)
Subway systems are complex infrastructural elements that require the cooperation of various engineering and architectural disciplines. In addition, by being buried, subway stations lack the visibility to be a part of an architectural design concern. However, with their important features in the urban context combined with their high number of users, subway stations should be evaluated as more than dots showing the station locations on the transportation network. As a result, this study develops an alt...
