Factors related with students' science achievement: A modeling study

Ceylan, Eren
Berberoglu, Giray
The present study investigated the factors related to students' science achievement in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS 1999) using Linear Structural Modeling. The results suggest that there were negative relationships between students' perception of failure in science, student-centered activities, and students' attitudes toward science with students' science achievement measures. Similarly, positive relationship was found between teacher centered activities and students' science achievement. Based on the result of this study, the issues that need to be scrutinized in the Turkish educational system, especially in the line with the new science curriculum, have been discussed.

Development of Preservice Science Teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in the context of Lesson Study
Güler Nalbantoğlu, Fulden; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Elementary Education (2023-2)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the development of preservice science teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the context of lesson study. The lesson study was integrated into the Practice Teaching in Science course, and there were four lesson study cycles throughout the study. Each lesson study cycle consisted of planning, teaching, reflecting, re-teaching, and re-reflecting phases. The design of the study was a m...
Optimum design of steel structures via differential evolution algorithm and application programming interface of SAP2000
Dedekargınoğlu, Özgür; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
The objective of this study is to investigate the use and efficiency of Differential Evolution (DE) method on structural optimization. The solution algorithm developed with DE is computerized into software called SOP2011 using VB.NET. SOP2011 is automated to achieve size optimum design of steel structures consisting of 1-D elements such as trusses and frames subjected to design provisions according to ASD-AISC (2010) and LRFD-AISC (2010). SOP2011 works simultaneously with the structural analysis and design ...
Use of self-determination theory to support basic psychological needs of preservice science teachers in an environmental science course
Karaarslan, Guliz; Ertepinar, Hamide; Sungur, Semra (2013-06-01)
In this paper, we examine how the basic psychological needs of preservice science teachers (PSTs) were supported in a series of environmental science course activities informed by self-determination theory (SDT). We collected qualitative data about the PSTs' sense of competence, autonomy, and relatedness through interviews, group discussions, assignments, and reflection papers. Data were analyzed in relation to the instructional design features of the course; namely, collective construction of ideas, studen...
Design methods for planar and spatial deployable structures
Kiper, Gökhan; Söylemez, Eres; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
This thesis study addresses the problem of overconstraint via introduction of conformal polyhedral linkages comprising revolute joints only and investigation of special geometric properties for the mobility of such overconstrained linkages. These linkages are of particular interest as deployable structures. First, planar case is issued and conditions for assembling irregular conformal polygonal linkages composed of regular and angulated scissor elements are derived. These planar assemblies are implemented i...
How does the science writing heuristic approach affect students' performances of different academic achievement levels? A case for high school chemistry
Kingir, Sevgi; Geban, Ömer; GÜNEL, MURAT (2012-01-01)
This study investigates the effects of the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH), known as an argumentation-based science inquiry approach, on Grade 9 students' performance on a post-test in relation to their academic achievement levels. Four intact classes taught by 2 chemistry teachers from a Turkish public high school were selected for the study; one class from each teacher was assigned as the treatment group, and the other class from each teacher was assigned as the control group. Students in the treatment gr...
