A brief state-of-the-art review is given on backfill materials and laboratory tests. A new system developed for testing backfill material in the laboratory is described. In this system, most of the limitations of previously applied techniques have been eliminated. In performing unconfined-deformability tests (UDT) and confined-deform ability tests (CDT), large cylindrical specimens having a diameter of 600 mm are used. The specimens were prepared from riverbed sand and gravel mixed with cement. A total of 135 UDT and 127 CDT specimens were tested in order to investigate the strength and deformability characteristics of 40 different combinations of backfill mixture. Calculation methods are evaluated in terms of stress-strain plots and are illustrated with examples. Typical results are presented. Two sets of deformation data can be obtained during testing: one from between the top and bottom plates, and the other from between the rings peripherally fixed onto the specimen. It is shown in this study that ring-to-ring readings provide more reliable modulus results.

Performance Analysis of a Micro-scale Model Helicopter Rotor in Hover Flight
Şahin, Mustafa; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (2015-09-12)
This experimental study contains the design, production, test and evaluation of the test processes of a Micro-Scale Rotor Test-Rig. For the study, NACA 0012 airfoil section is selected as a rotor blade without a twist and a taper ratio. The tests cover the thrust and the torque relation with different blade pitch angles and RPM values.
Control, design, and implementation of a low-cost ultracapacitor test system
Eroglu, Hasan Huseyin; Hava, Ahmet Masum (2013-01-01)
This paper reviews the ultracapacitor (UC) test procedures, establishes simple and economical power electronic conversion system-based UC test equipment, and experimentally evaluates the performance of a UC module. The power converter hardware structure and control algorithms of the designed system are discussed in detail. The high bandwidth and high accuracy current programming capability of the converter for the purpose of charging and discharging the UC, as required during testing, is illustrated via the...
Comparison of undrained shear strength by pressuremeter and other tests, and numerical assessment of the effect of finite probe length in pressuremeter tests
IŞIK, Nihat Sinan; ULUSAY, REŞAT; Doyuran, Vedat (2015-08-01)
There is a wide body of research reported in the literature which compare the undrained shear strength determined from various field and laboratory tests. The pressuremeter testing equipment and the related design techniques have been continuously refined. However, the undrained shear strength (S (u)) determined from the pressuremeter test (PMT) is generally higher than that obtained from other field or laboratory tests. In this study, numerical methods to consider the effects of length to diameter ratio (L...
Development of test structures and methods for characterization of MEMS materials
Yıldırım, Ender; Arıkan, Mehmet Ali Sahir; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
This study concerns with the testing methods for mechanical characterization at micron scale. The need for the study arises from the fact that the mechanical properties of materials at micron scale differ compared to their bulk counterparts, depending on the microfabrication method involved. Various test structures are designed according to the criteria specified in this thesis, and tested for this purpose in micron scale. Static and fatigue properties of the materials are aimed to be extracted through the ...
Structural properties of ZnO binary alloy nanosystems: molecular-dynamics simulations
Kılıç, Mehmet Emin; Erkoç, Şakir; Department of Physics (2015)
ZnO nanostructures revealed novel implementations in optoelectronics, sensors, transducers and biomedical sciences. There are different shapes of ZnO nanostructures such as zero dimensional-0D (quantum dots, nanoparticles), one dimensional-1D (nanorods, nanowires, nanotubes) and two dimensional-2D (nanosheets) and their properties have been experimentally prepared and investigated. Thus, ZnO is one of the richest family of nanostructures among all materials, both in structures and in properties. In this the...
