Finite element modelling of TBC failure mechanisms by using XFEM
Bostancı, Safa Mesut; Gürses, Ercan; Çöker, Demirkan (2018-01-01)
Thermal Barrier Coatings have been widely used in modern turbine engines to protect the nickel based metal substrate from the high temperature service conditions, 1600-1800 K. In this study, some of the failure mechanisms of typical Air Plasma Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) used in after-burner structures composed of three major layers: Inconel 718 substrate, NiCrAlY based metallic bond coat (BC) and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) based ceramic top coat (TC) are investigated. Investigation of the ...
High-lift design optimization using Navier-Stokes equations
Eyi, Sinan; Rogers, SE; Kwak, D (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), 1996-05-01)
This article presents a design optimization method for maximizing lift without increasing the drag of multielement airfoils at takeoff and landing configurations. It uses an incompressible Navier-Stokes dow solver (INS2D), a chimera overlaid grid system (PEGSUS), and a constrained numerical optimizer (DOT). Aerodynamic sensitivity derivatives are obtained using finite differencing. The method is first validated with single-clement airfoil designs and then applied to three-element airfoil designs. Reliable d...
Low velocity impact analysis of a composite mini unmanned air vehicle during belly landing
Yüksel, Serhan; Kayran, Altan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2010)
Mini unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) have high significance among other UAV's, in different categories, due to their ease of production, flexibility of maintenance, decrease in weight due to the elimination of landing gear system and simplicity of use. They are usually built to meet 'hand launching' and 'belly landing' criteria in order to have easy flight and easy landing features. Due to the hand take-off and belly landing features there is no need to have a runway and this feature is a very significant advan...
Reacting flow analysis of a cavity-based scramjet combustor using a Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov method
Rouzbar, R.; Eyi, Sinan (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2018-12-01)
The scramjet is a rather a new technology and there are many issues related to their operation, especially when it comes to the combustion processes. Combustion in high-speed flows causes various problems such as flame instability and poor fuel-air mixing efficiency. One of the methods used to overcome these problems is to recess a cavity in the combustor wall where a secondary flow is generated. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code is developed to analyse the reacting flow passing throu...
