Quality of communication is a key factor in the success of construction projects. Visualization technologies can play an important role in improving the quality of data by improving human comprehension and increasing the depth of the information delivered. Visualization has for some time been identified as one of the major technology themes allowing development of construction processes. However, visualization has not been embraced as a strategic toot by construction companies, and they generally fail to take full advantage of available visualization tools. This paper aims to evaluate the extent of visualization as a communication tool in the construction industry and to determine potential benefits to be gained through implementation of visualization. The current state of the use of visualization for communication in Turkish architecture, engineering, and construction companies is mapped through surveys and interviews. Information flow contents and types are analysed to determine the types of information in the construction process that may benefit from visual representation. According to the priorities of the expectations ranked by the users and the potential of different visualization tools, the level of visualization required for each data flow is determined by a quality function deployment (QFD) based approach.

Project appraisal and selection using the analytic network process
Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (Canadian Science Publishing, 2007-07-01)
Where prioritization and selection process of large-scale construction projects is concerned, governments should consider various quantitative and qualitative criteria when choosing the best project alternative. The traditional benefit-cost (B/C) analysis has some drawbacks in terms of analyzing qualitative attributes that cannot be easily expressed in monetary terms. To eliminate this limitation, multicriteria decision-making techniques are proposed for the solution of project prioritization problems. In t...
Comparison of experienced and novice cost estimator behaviors in information pull and push methods
Kiziltas, Semiha; Akinci, Burcu; Gonzalez, Cleotilde (Canadian Science Publishing, 2010-02-01)
Construction cost estimators mainly use analogy-based decision-making processes while estimating activity production rates in new bids They need to search information items that will help them in understanding the differences and similarities between the current and previously Completed projects to select appropriate production rates and make necessary adjustments to the selected production rates. The objective of the study is to understand the effect of information pull-push methods on the behaviors of cos...
Cost assessment of construction projects through neural networks
Gulcicek, Umit; Ozkan, Omer; Gunduz, Murat; DEMİR, İSMAİL HAKKI (Canadian Science Publishing, 2013-06-01)
Construction performance parameters have experienced greater international attention and discussion in recent years. In this study, the change in the load-bearing system cost of a reinforced concrete housing estate building was investigated in relation to the building importance factor, earthquake region, soil type, floor area, and the number of stories. Three different housing estate projects with seven and fifteen stories were investigated. The structural design calculations were performed according to fo...
A strategic safety management framework through balanced scorecard and quality function deployment
Gunduz, Murat; Simsek, Burak (Canadian Science Publishing, 2007-05-01)
The aim of this paper is to propose a safety management framework for construction companies. A literature review was carried out to identify significant factors that would improve safety performance. Two management tools-namely, the balanced scorecard and quality function deployment (QFD)-were used to construct the framework. Strategic goals were established for each of the following perspectives of the balanced scorecard: financial and cultural, employee, process, and learning. Afterwards, a questionnaire...
An analytic hierarchy process based model for risk and opportunity assessment of international construction projects
Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (Canadian Science Publishing, 2006-01-01)
Risk assessment of international projects is a complicated task because of the sensitivity of project success related to country specific risks as well as project risks. Decision makers face the difficulty of weighing project opportunities against risks and determining attractiveness of projects while giving bidding decisions. The aim of this paper is to propose a methodology for risk and opportunity assessment of international projects. The proposed model uses an analytic hierarchy process for calculation ...
