In this study, influence of the different system operating conditions on the performance of a solar desalination system using humidification-dehumidification process have been investigated experimentally under the climatological conditions of Ankara (40 degrees N, 33 degrees E), Turkey. An experimental set-up that consists of a double-pass flat plate solar air heater with two glass covers, pad humidifier, dehumidifying exchanger and water storage tank was designed and manufactured. Working principle of the set-up is based on the idea of closed water and open-air cycles. A series of tests were performed on it in outdoor environment, in order to assess the effect of mass flow rate of the feed water, process air and cooling water, double-pass flat plate solar air heater, initial water temperature and amount of the water inside the storage tank on the productivity of the system. Additionally, an evacuated tubular solar water heater unit was integrated to the existing system and the effect of this integration on the performance of the system was examined. Solar radiation, wind speed, relative humidity, mass flow rate of the feed water, process air and cooling water, mass of condensate water and temperatures at various locations were obtained during the experiments.

Theoretical investigation of a humidification-dehumidification desalination system configured by a double-pass flat plate solar air heater
Yamali, Cemil; Solmus, Ismail (Elsevier BV, 2007-02-05)
The aim of this study is to investigate theoretically the effect of different system operating conditions, types of air heater, and some different design parameters and a weather condition on a solar water desalination system performance under the climatological conditions of Ankara (40 degrees N,33 degrees E), Turkey. For this purpose, a computer simulation program based on the mathematical model is developed by means of MATLAB software. In this simulation program, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method is us...
A Feasibility study for external control on self-organized production of plasmonic enhancement interfaces for solar cells
Zolfaghari Borra, Mona; Bek, Alpan; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2013)
The present study is about the improvement of the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells in which plasmonic light-trapping approach has been investigated. In this study, metal nanoparticles are allowed to form in a self-organized fashion on both flat and textured full scale monocrystalline silicon solar cell. These metal nanoparticles with strong optical interaction cross-sections at localized plasmonic resonance energies, improve coupling of the incoming light into the active area of solar cells by wa...
Long term outdoor performances of three different on-grid PV arrays in central Anatolia - An extended analysis
ÖZDEN, TALAT; Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin; Turan, Raşit (2017-02-01)
Long term outdoor testing of the PV systems at different climatic conditions or different systems under the same ambient conditions are extremely important in producing policies for the transition to renewables. The present research is the testing of three different PV systems under the same climatic conditions of central Anatolia, after four years of operation. The systems consist of a mono-Si, an a-Si thin film and a CdTe thin film arrays. Different calculation procedures of the input solar irradiation on...
Theoretical and experimental investigation of a humidification-dehumidification desalination system using solar energy
Solmuş, İsmail; Yamalı, Cemil; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
In this thesis, experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to investigate the performance of a solar desalination system working on humidification-dehumidification principle under the climatological conditions of Ankara, Turkey. The desalination unit was configured mainly by a double-pass flat plate solar air heater with two glass covers, pad humidifier, storage tank and dehumidifying exchanger. The system used in this work is based on the idea of closed water and open air cycles. A computer s...
Performance tracking & characterization of commercial solar panels
Oğulgönen, Celal Güvenç; Kıncal, Serkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2014)
This study aims to characterize the performance of different types of commercial solar panels in terms of the meteorological parameters such as irradiance, temperature, pressure, relative humidity with the technologies of mono and polycrystalline along with thin film, by evaluating the performance data collected with a Daystar MT-5 I-V curve tracer. The approach to this characterization is a comprehensive data collection scheme where solar panel performance is monitored side-by-side with an exhaustive list ...
