Al6061/Al2O3 composites containing 15-40 vol.% of different-sized (37-276 mu m) alumina particles were produced by in-situ powder metallurgy (IPM). In this method, the stir casting and powder metallurgy (PM) synthesizing processes are combined into an integrated net shape forming process. For the preparation of each powder mixture, alumina particles were added to the molten aluminum alloy, and the resulting slurry was stirred at a specified temperature for a predetermined time. During the stirring process, alumina particles disintegrated into the molten alloy, and subsequent quenching resulted in a mixture of alumina and aluminum alloy powder particles. These powder mixtures were cold pressed and then sintered. The effects of stirring time and temperature. along with the alumina content and particle size on the size distribution, microstructure and morphology of the aluminum particles produced were investigated. It was found that the finer aluminum powder particles were produced by increasing the alumina content and by decreasing both the stirring temperature (from 780 to 710 degrees C) and alumina particle size (within the range of 37-150 mu m). A comparison of optical and SEM micrographs of aluminum particles produced by IPM, solid assisted melt disintegration (SAMD) and gas atomization revealed that pore-free and more spherical particles were produced by the IPM and SAMD methods. Moreover, a microstructural investigation of the final products proved that consolidated composites with high contents of well-distributed reinforcing particles could be fabricated by the IPM method.

Preparation and Characterization of Polypropylene/Serpentine Composites
Tan, Semra; Tincer, İsmail Teoman (Wiley, 2011-07-15)
Composites of serpentine and polypropylene (PP) were prepared by twin-screw extrusion. Serpentine was collected as rocks from the Ankara-Beynam region and ground into powder with an average particle size of about 3 mu m for composite production. Both as-received (rock) and powdered serpentine were characterized. A silane coupling agent (SCA), gamma-aminopropyl triethoxy silane, was used for the surface treatment of serpentine. Mechanical properties of the composites were measured in terms of impact strength...
Microstructure characterization of SiCp-reinforced aluminum matrix composites by newly developed computer-based algorithms
Kretz, Ferenc; Gacsi, Zoltan; Gür, Cemil Hakan (2006-09-28)
This paper presents a new approach for analyzing the microstructure of SiCp-reinforced aluminum matrix composites from digital images. Various samples of aluminum matrix composite were fabricated by hot pressing the powder mixtures with certain volume and size combinations of pure At and SiC particles. Microstructures of the samples were analyzed by computer-based image processing methods. Since the conventional methods are not suitable for separating phases of such complex microstructures, some new algorit...
Design of V-shaped array geometry
Filik, Tansu; Tuncer, Temel Engin; Yasar, T. Kaya (2007-06-13)
in this study, a new design method is proposed for V-shaped planar array geometry for two-dimensional azimuth and elevation angle estimation. The proposed method is similar to filter design in signal processing. This method determines the V-shaped array geometry which gives the best 2-D angle estimation performances for the specified design parameters. The best geometry is determined by using Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) and performance comparison is done with other planar array geometries.
Investigation of microstructure inhomogeneity in SiCp-reinforced aluminum matrix composites
Gacsi, Zoltan; Gür, Cemil Hakan; Makszimus, Andrea; Pieczonka, Tadeusz (2007-01-01)
The type, volume fraction, size, shape and arrangement of embedded particles influence the mechanical properties of the particle reinforced metal matrix composites. This presents the investigation of the SiC particle and porosity distributions in various aluminum matrix composites produced by cold- and hot-pressing. The inicrostructures were characterized by optical microscopy and stereological parameters. SiC and porosity volume fractions, and the anisotropy distribution function were measured to establish...
Coatings of hydroxyapatite - nanosize alpha alumina composites on Ti-6Al-4V
Evis, Zafer (Elsevier BV, 2005-12-01)
Composites of hydroxyapatite (HA) and nanosize-alpha-(alpha)-Al2O3 with 5 wt.% CaF2 were coated on Ti-6Al-4V rods by cold pressing and sintered in air or argon atmosphere at 1100 degrees C to improve the bonding between the metal and the ceramic. 25 and 40 wt.% alpha-Al2O3-5 wt.% CaF2-HA composites gave the best results of strong bonding. 25 wt.% alpha-Al2O3-5 wt.% CaF2-HA and Ti-6Al-4V showed the same thermal expansion coefficients. The thermal expansion coefficient of the 40 wt.% alpha-Al2O3-5 wt.% CaF2-H...
