A wind model based on the surface atmospheric pressure values recorded at the meteorological stations surrounding the basin is developed for the Sea of Marmara. The pressure values recorded at 14 stations are implemented. The pressure data is subjected to a quality control process to discard any value that seems to be incorrect. The pressure field over the whole basin is then constructed by using a surface fitting method. The gradient of the surface representing the pressure field is used to compute the geostrophic wind which is then reduced to the 10-meter height (surface wind) using an empirical reduction matrix. The model has been verified using offshore measured wind data for the months of September 1990 and January 1991. The model results show reasonably good fit to the measurements with an RMS error of about 3.5 m/s and a bias of about - 0.5 m/s. The third generation WAM model is used for wave computations. Continuous computations of wind and wave fields over the Sea of Marmara were carried out for the years 1991-1994 (both inclusive). The long-term (operational) wind and wave statistics were performed using this data set.

Wind and wind wave climate research along the southern part of Black Sea
Çaban, Seçkin; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
Winds and wind wave climate are two important phenomena for Black Sea basin. Wind wave climate has an important role on design of coastal structures and naval transportation. Despite this fact the wind wave climate is not well known for the Turkish coasts because of limited studies on this subject. The purpose of the present study was to further understand wind and wind wave climate along the Black Sea coastline of Türkiye. For this purpose wind and wind wave data for every 65 months is obtained from ECMWF ...
Wind and swell wave climate for Turkish coast of The Aegean and Mediterranean Sea
Derebay, Saygın Kemal; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
The swell waves which are an important component of wind generated waves have significant effects on small craft and fisheries. The swell wave climate has an important role in the design and operation of fishing harbors and harbors for small craft. Despite this fact the swell wave climate is not well known for the Turkish coasts. The purpose of the present study was to identify the swell wave climate along the Aegean and Mediterranean Sea coastline of Türkiye. For this purpose wind and swell wave data for a...

Analyses of atmospheric and marine observations along the Turkish coast
Tutsak, Ersin; Özsoy, Emin; Department of Physical Oceanography (2012)
Time series and spectral analyses are applied to meteorological data (wind velocity, air temperature, barometric pressure) and sea level measurements from a total of 13 monitoring stations along the Turkish Coast. Analyses of four-year time series identify main time scales of transport and motion while establishing seasonal characteristics, i.e. distinguishing, for instance, between winter storms and summer sea-breeze system. Marine flow data acquired by acoustic doppler current pro filers (ADCP) is also a...
Wind and wave climate in Eastern Mediterranean basin
Kışlakcı, Ahmet Umud; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
The wind and wave (wind wave/swell wave) climate has an important role in the design and operation of coastal and marine structures, harbors and ports. The objective of this study is to identify the statistical characteristics of the winds, wind waves and swell waves in Eastern Mediterranean, and coastline of Türkiye. For this purpose, the data of wind speed and direction, swell and wind wave height, period and direction for a certain duration with the six hours time intervals are obtained from ECMWF for th...
