Cation modulation of carbonyldipyrrinone (CDP) fluorescence: emission-ratiometric sensing of calcium

Optically dilute solutions of 2,3,7,8-tetraethyl-N,N'-carbonyldipyrrinone displays an absorbance peak at 401 nm and an emission peak at 493 nm in acetonitrile. The two carbonyl groups in the structure seems to be optimally placed for cation coordination, and when calcium ions are added in the form of a perchlorate salt, a remarkable bathochromic change in the absorption and emission spectrum takes place: the absorption peak shifts by 24 nm and the emission peak shifts by 49 nm towards the red end of the visible spectrum. The shift in the emission spectrum allows wavelength ratiometric assessment of calcium concentration. In addition, the response is highly selective with respect to the cations added.

Optical fluoride sensing with a bay region functionalized perylenediimide dye
Yukruk, Funda (2006-01-01)
A perylenedimiide (PDI) derivative functionalized at the perylene core (bay region) to carry phenyl boronic acid groups was shown to interact with fluoride with changes in the emission and absorption spectrum. These changes are most likely due to fluoride-induced aggregation and/or quenching of the perylenediimide dye. The dye is also selective; among halide ions, fluoride anions generate a significant response. Thus, this class of PDI derivatives is likely to be useful in practical fluoride sensing.
Radiative Heat Transfer in the Dilute Zone of an Air-Fired Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor and Its Oxy-Fired Retrofit
Ozen, G.; Aydin, F.; Selçuk, Nevin (2016-01-01)
A 2D radiation model based on method of lines (MOL) solution of discrete ordinates method (DOM) coupled with spectral line-based weighted sum of gray gases model (SLW) is developed to predict radiative heat fluxes along the dilute zone of the lignite-fired 150 kWt Middle East Technical University (METU) circulating fluidized bed combustor (CFBC) under both air-fired and oxy-fired conditions. The dilute zone is treated as an axisymmetric cylindrical enclosure containing a non-gray, absorbing-emitting-isotrop...
Femtosecond filamentation in chalcogenide glasses limited by two-photon absorption
Blonskyi, Ivan; Kadan, Viktor; Shpotyuk, Oleh; Iovu, Mihail; Pavlov, Ihor (2010-09-01)
Filamentation of 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses in the conditions of strong two-photon absorption was first directly observed in As4Ge30S66 chalcogenide glass, this effect being accompanied by increase in the pulse spectrum width from 8.5 to 11 nm and its modulation indicating the pulse temporal splitting. In contrast, there was no filamentation and pulse spectrum widening in stoichiometric As2S3 glass. The nonlinear figure of merit was shown to be as high as 0.5 and only similar to 0.1 in glassy As4Ge30S6...
Interaction of bromine with Ni(110) studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy
Fishlock, T.W.; Pethica, J.B.; Oral, Ahmet; Egdell, R.G.; Jones, F.H. (1999-05-10)
The adsorption of bromine on Ni(110) has been studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). At low bromine coverage 'butterfly' structures are observed in STM, built up from 'pairs of pairs' of greyscale maxima. Two alternative models for the butterflies are discussed, the most plausible of which involves location of dissociated Br atoms in two-fold hollow sites flanked by pairs of Ni adatoms. At higher coverages the discrete butterfly structure breaks down and adatom pairs form a disordered arrangement...
