The performance of a commercial, compact and portable laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) system and a constructed laboratory LIBS system with different experimental approaches were investigated in order to make improvements in the qualitative results. One of the experimental studies pertained to the investigation of the different crystal surfaces of silicon. The second experimental study involved the polarization effects by which the polarization dependency was demonstrated. The third and final experimental study was an unconventional orthogonal double pulse configuration with a 45 degrees angle of incidence for both lasers in opposite directions. By means of these experimental approaches reliable, reproducible results were obtained, relative intensities of the emission lines were enhanced and better signal to noise ratios were observed. Furthermore, the qualitative analysis performance of the commercial system software was compared with the code developed. The code yielded more accurate and precise analysis capability.

Measurement of Lift and Drag Force in Morphing Wings Using High Precision Load Cell
Özkanaktı, Harun; Körpe, Durmuş Sinan; Özgen, Serkan (2015-06-29)
This study focuses on experimental investigation of three different morphing wing planforms and a baseline wing planform using commercial CFD software and load cell measurements in a wind tunnel for the validation of an optimization code developed separately [1]. The wing planforms of interest originate from an optimization code that minimizes drag for a required lift utilizing a 3-D panel method with a 2-D boundary layer solver. The optimization method is gradient based. The first planform of interest is t...
Probing the Mechanical Behavior of Nanostructured Materials Through Micropillar Compression Experiments
Alpkaya, Alican Tuncay; Motallebzadeh, Amir; Özerinç, Sezer (null; 2018-10-27)
Recent developments in focused ion beam (FIB) milling and nanomechanical sensing technologies have enabled the fabrication of microspecimens and their mechanical testing at the small scale. One of the most recent micromechanical testing techniques is micropillar compression, where a microcylindrical specimen is milled by FIB and it is tested under uniaxial compression using a nanoindenter. In this study we utilize this technique to investigate the mechanical behavior of Cu-Nb nanolayers. The samples were pr...
Characterization of gas turbine burner instabilities by wavelet analysis of infrared images
Allouis, Christophe Gerard; Amoresano, A.; Langella, G.; Niola, V.; Quaremba, G. (2016-05-01)
In this paper, an optical approach is tested to spatially characterize combustion fluctuations in a single burner atmospheric gas turbine test rig. The target of present investigation was to test the optical technique during combustion tests campaign, in order to couple it to an acoustic one in a future activity to be developed on the same experimental setup. The analysis based on fast infrared imaging of flames, coupled with photomultiplier and microphones measurements, has been elaborated on a 3 MW gas tu...
Investigation of the effect of dopant on characteristics of poly(3-methyl thiophene) via pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Gözet, Tuba; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2007-03-01)
In this work, a direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry technique was applied to investigate the thermal and the structural characteristics of electrochemically prepared PF6- and BF4- doped poly(3-methylthiophene) (PMTh) to explore the effect of dopant on thermal and structural characteristics. It has been determined that the thermal degradation of PMTh occurs in two steps as in the case of polythiophene, (PTh). The first step was assigned to the loss of the dopant, and the second step to the deg...
Characterization of primary and permanent teeth using terahertz spectroscopy
KAMBUROĞLU, KIVANÇ; Yetimoglu, N. O.; Altan, Hakan (British Institute of Radiology, 2014-07-01)
Objectives: To analyse teeth samples by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system that was developed in the laboratory to measure the properties of sliced teeth sections in transmission mode.
