Computational study of ethylene epoxidation
Özbek, Murat Oluş; Önal, Işık; Santen, Rutger A. van; Department of Chemical Engineering (2011)
This work computationally investigates the partial oxidation of ethylene (i.e. ethylene epoxidation) using periodic Density Functional Theory (DFT) on slab models that represent the catalyst surfaces. The mechanical aspects of the reaction were investigated on silver surfaces, which are industrially applied catalysts, for a wide range of surface models varying from metallic surfaces with low oxygen coverage to oxide surfaces. For comparison, the metallic and oxide phases of copper and gold were also studied...
Computational study of scattering from healthy and diseased red blood cells
Ergül, Özgür Salih; Gurel, Levent (SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng, 2010-07-01)
We present a comparative study of scattering from healthy red blood cells (RBCs) and diseased RBCs with deformed shapes. Scattering problems involving three-dimensional RBCs are formulated accurately with the electric and magnetic current combined- field integral equation and solved efficiently by the multilevel fast multipole algorithm. We compare scattering cross section values obtained for different RBC shapes and different orientations. In this way, we determine strict guidelines to distinguish deformed...
Computational modeling of rupture in rubbery polymers
Akçören, Berkay; Göktepe, Serdar; Department of Civil Engineering (2020)
Rubbery polymers, also known as elastomers, can exhibit large deformations that are generally accompanied by inelastic deformations. Owing to their superior mechanical, physical, and chemical properties, elastomers are widely used in a broad range of industrial applications such as car tires, seismic isolators, mechanical membranes, and seals. For these applications, failure prediction is cardinally essential. Therefore, this thesis is concerned with the computational failure analysis of rubbery polymers th...
Computational study of hydroxyapatite structures, properties and defects
Bystrov, V. S.; Coutinho, J.; Bystrova, A. V.; Dekhtyar, Yu D.; Pullar, R. C.; Poronin, A.; Palcevskis, E.; Dindune, A.; Alkan, B.; Durucan, Caner; Paramonova, E. V. (IOP Publishing, 2015-05-20)
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) was studied from a first principle approach using the local density approximation (LDA) method in AIMPRO code, in combination with various quantum mechanical (QM) and molecular mechanical (MM) methods from HypemChem 7.5/8.0. The data obtained were used for studies of HAp structures, the physical properties of HAp (density of electronic states-DOS, bulk modulus etc) and defects in HAp. Computed data confirmed that HAp can co-exist in different phases-hexagonal and monoclinic. Ordered mon...
Computational Demonstration of Multiband Nanoantennas for Power Enhancement
Gür, Uğur Meriç; Ustun, Emre; Eroglu, Omer; Dikmen, Fatih; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2017-07-14)
We present multiband nanoantennas that can provide large enhancement factors at multiple frequencies in the optical spectrum. The structures are obtained by opening slits on the conventional bowtie designs. Since frequency/geometry scaling is not valid due to plasmonic properties of metals, two dimensional scans are performed using a rigorous solver based on surface integral equations and method of moments. The results demonstrate the feasibility of nanoantennas with multiband characteristics that can be us...
