The sway profile and sway quantities of a three dimensional structure must be known during the design process, in order to satisfy the criteria required in the design codes. Presently, the sway data of buildings is obtained by available computer programs. Even though sway data can readily be obtained by computer programs, during the preliminary design stage where cross-sectional dimensions are not yet finalized, repeated sway calculations become necessary, until code restrictions are satisfied. Therefore, the design engineer needs a method to calculate sway, which is realistic as well as quick and simple. Such a procedure may provide very practical solutions in the performance evaluation of existing structures. In this study, rather simple analytical relationships are developed to calculate sway of framed and shear wall-frame buildings, based on general differential equations of equilibrium. It is clear that such sway calculation methods will facilitate the efforts required in calculation of sway of building structures.

Capacity related properties of RC frame buildings in Turkey
Yakut, Ahmet (2008-01-01)
The capacity curves of various structural systems that are used in the HAZUS methodology to determine seismic vulnerability were developed based on the seismic design codes. These capacity curves are, therefore, very idealistic and do not take into account variations in the regional design practice. This article presents the results of nonlinear static analyses of representative reinforced concrete frame buildings located in Turkey to obtain their capacity curves. A representative set of buildings was selec...
Structural Fire Safety of Circular Concrete Railroad Tunnel Linings
Caner, Alp (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2009-09-01)
In many tunnel designs, lining cross section is selected based on construction requirements rather than design loads. A constant cross section is typically used along a tunnel especially for tunnels constructed by tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Factor of safety against failure is typically high at shallow depth regions of alignment. Minor repairable damage is targeted at rare events such as earthquakes, train derailments, explosions, and long-duration fires, and a reduction to service load factor of safety ...
Structural modification with additional degrees of freedom in large systems
Canbaloğlu, Güvenç; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
In the design and development stages of mechanical structures, it is important to predict the dynamic characteristics of modified structures. Since time and cost are critical in design and development stage, structural modification methods predicting the dynamic responses of modified structures from those of the original structure and modification properties are very important, especially for large systems. In this thesis structural modification methods are investigated and an effective structural modificat...
Harmonic response of large engineering structures with nonlinear modifications
Kalaycıoğlu, Taner; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
During the design and development stages of mechanical structures, after each modification made in order to satisfy design criteria, dynamic characteristics of the structure change and should be determined through reanalyzing the structure dynamically. Due to the significance of computational time and cost in design processes, it is inevitable for structural modification methods, especially for large systems, to become involved in predicting the dynamic behavior of modified structures from those of the orig...
Vulnerability assessment of reinforced concrete moment resisting frame buildings
Erduran, Emrah; Yakut, Ahmet (2007-04-01)
A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure has been developed for reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings with masonry infill walls. The procedure is based on member damage functions, in terms of interstory drift ratios. These functions are developed for the primary components, namely, columns, beams, and infill walls. For developing these functions, analytical investigations to determine the influence of several parameters on the damageability of components were combined with experimental data. A...
