Field load test of three drilled shafts socketed in completely weathered and exteremely fractured metadiorite / amphibolite were conducted using the Osterberg load cell. The objective of the testing was to determine the uplift capacity of short sockets bored in the base rock for foundation design verification of two major viaducts being constructed in the vicinity of North Anatolian Fault. Short piles with 2, 3, and 4m socket lengths were loaded to failure to obtain the ultimate frictional capacity in tension. Observed frictional capacity of the extremely weathered rock (soil like material) was found on the order of 200 kPa. The tests allowed to observe the mobilization of end bearing stresses at the lower part of the pile without reaching to failure.

Shear mode fracture toughness of rock with different core-based specimen geometries
Het, Kıvanç; Tutluoğlu, Levend; Department of Mining Engineering (2014)
Shear mode fracture toughness tests on core specimens of gabbro rock were conducted. Tests were conducted under three-point bending and Brazilian type indirect compression load. In order to investigate the reasons for having different fracture toughness values with the different testing methods and geometries, modeling with ABAQUS software was conducted. Stress distributions around the mode II notches were analyzed. In order to assess which specimen geometry results in similar stress distributions as in the...
Size influence on the sealing performance of cementitious borehole plugs.
Akgün, Haluk (1986-01-01)
Hydraulic conductivity tests were performed on expansive mixes of ideal class A cement plugs cast in basalt blocks and in steel pipes. Plug diameters range from 25 mm (1 inch) to 200 mm (8 inches), with most of the tests reported performed on plugs in the upper end of this range (150 mm (6 inch) and over). Cement curing temperatures were monitored, as well as pipe strains induced by cement swelling. As a result of the (unintentional) block fracturing, it became possible to study the hydraulic conductivity o...
Support capacity estimation of a diversion tunnel in weak rock
Ozsan, A; Basarir, H (Elsevier BV, 2003-03-01)
This paper presents the results of the support capacity estimation for the diversion tunnel of the Urus dam site in highly weathered tuff and weak zone. Tunneling in weak rock requires some special considerations, since misjudgment in support design results in costly failures. There are several ways of estimating rock support pressure and selecting support. However, all systems suffer from their characteristic limitations in achieving objectives. Thus, it is more useful to use different methods for estimati...
Crack propagation in a commercial steel
Bilir , Oğuz Gürkan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1988-5)
In this work, the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of commercial steel sheet specimens containing a circular hole, under uniaxial loading conditions at room temperature was investigated. The experimental data have been analysed in terms of variability of material constants. The results were presented in the form of power relationship between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor range.
Effect of stress ratio on the rate of growth of fatigue cracks in 1100 Al-alloy
Bilir, Ömer.G.; Harun, Metin (Elsevier BV, 1990-1)
Axial load fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on notched sheet specimens made of 1100 aluminum alloy. These tests were made at stress ratios (ratio of the minimum stress to the maximum stress) ranging from −0.5 to 0.5 in order to study the effects of stress ratio on fatigue crack growth. Experimental fatigue crack propagation data were analysed using Paris-Erdoǧan stress intensity analysis. The data from the tests at different stress ratios showed that two regions, namely, region I and region I...
