The Mediterranean inflow issuing from the Bosphorus Strait has been documented to enter the Black Sea essentially confined in a 10-km long channel which is a continuation of the strait over the adjacent shelf. The width of the channel is between 500 and 1000 m. A 3.5-km-long sill, with a depth of 60 m, is situated in the channel at its beginning, just north of the end of the strait. The Mediterranean water flows into the Black Sea essentially on a continuous basis throughout the year, but it may be interrupted for short durations under unusually strong and persistent winds. After existing from the channel, the Mediterranean inflow spreads in a thin layer above the bottom and continues in a generally northerly direction towards the shelf break.

THE MODELING OF THE FLOW OF WATER THROUGH THE BOSPORUS
JOHNS, B; OGUZ, T (1990-03-01)
A numerical model is developed for the exchange of water between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea through the Bosphorus. An essential part of the modelling procedure is the use of a turbulence energy equation in a scheme of turbulence parametrization. The simultaneous application of a transport equation for the salinity leads to a turbulence suppression term associated with the existence of a strongly stable vertical salinity stratification. Experiments are performed that show how a prescribed difference b...
The distribution of man-made and naturally produced halocarbons in a double layer flow strait system
Fogelqvist, E; Tanhua, T; Basturk, O; Salihoglu, I (1996-08-01)
The Bosphorus Strait, which connects the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea via the Marmara Sea, is characterised by two distinct water masses. The upper layer consists of low density Black Sea water (sigma-t 10-11) flowing southward, and it is underlain by high density water (sigma-t > 28) of Mediterranean origin flowing northward. The sharp density gradient between the two layers is due to the difference in salinities. Here we report measurements on a suite of low molecular weight halocarbons together with b...
Application of a three-dimensional numerical model to the idealized conditions of the bosphorus strait.
Sözer, Adil; Özsoy, Emin; Department of Marine Sciences (2002)
The Bosphorus Strait is a narrow and shallow channel between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea which plays an important role in the Turkish Straits System connecting the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The exchange flow through the Bosphorus Strait is principally determined by geometry and stratification, and exhibits a complex nonlinear response to forcing by the net water budget, pressure and wind setup effects in adjacent basins. This study aims for a better understanding of the behaviour of the ...
A comparison of the contribution of zooplankton and nekton taxa to the near-surface acoustic structure of three Turkish seas
Mutlu, E (Wiley, 2005-03-01)
The bioacoustics of upper waters of the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, and the Mediterranean Sea were studied in October 1999 with an echosounder with 120 and 200 kHz dual-beam transducers. Net tows were taken to ground-truth the acoustic volume backscattering. A forward solution was applied to determine significant scatterers of the three seas with regard to detection limits of the frequencies and background noise measured in each sea. The noise was 4 dB higher in the Sea of Marmara than in the other two s...
Observations on the Rim Current structure, CIW formation and transport in the western Black Sea
Oguz, T; Besiktepe, S (1999-10-01)
CTD and ADCP measurements together with a sequence of satellite images indicate pronounced current meandering and eddy activity in the western Black Sea during April 1993. The Rim Current is identified as a well-defined meandering jet stream confined over the steepest topographic slope and associated cyclonic-anticyclonic eddy pairs located on both its sides. It has a form of highly energetic and unstable flow system, which, as it propagates cyclonically along the periphery of the basin, is modified in char...
