Folic acid (FA) supplements and food fortification are used to prevent neural tube defects and to lower plasma homocysteine. Through exposure to food fortification and vitamin supplement use, large populations in the United States and elsewhere have an unprecedented high FA intake. We evaluated dietary and supplemental intakes of folate and FA in relation to an index of immune function, natural killer cell (NK) cytotoxicity, among 105 healthy, postmenopausal women. Among women with a diet low in folate ( 400 mu g/d had reduced NK cytotoxicity compared with those consuming a low-folate diet and no supplements (P = 0.02). Prompted by this observation, we assessed the presence of unmetabolized FA in plasma as a biochemical marker of excess FA. Unmetabolized folic acid was detected in 78% of plasma samples from fasting participants. We found an inverse relation between the presence of unmetabolized FA in plasma and NK cytotoxicity. NK cytotoxicity was similar to 23% lower among women with detectable folic acid (P = 0.04). This inverse relation was stronger among women >= 60 y old and more pronounced with increasing unmetabolized FA concentrations (P-trend = 0.002). Because of the increased intake of FA in many countries, our findings highlight the need for further studies on the effect of long-term high FA intake on immune function and health.

Square prism micropillars on poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces modulate the morphology and differentiation of human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells

Use of soluble factors is the most common strategy to induce osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in vitro, but it may raise potential side effects in vivo. The topographies of the substrate surfaces affect cell behavior, and this could be a promising approach to guide stem cell differentiation. Micropillars have been reported to modulate cellular and subcellular shape, and it is particularly interesting to investigate whether these changes in cell morphology can modulate gene express...
Adjusted leptin level (ALL) is a predictor for hyperemesis gravidarum
Demir, B; Erel, CT; Haberal, A; Ozturk, N; Guler, D; Kocak, M (Elsevier BV, 2006-02-01)
Objective: To compare the maternal serum leptin level according to the gestational week and to assess the relationship between the adjusted serum leptin level and thyroid hormones. In order to obtain this objective a new parameter is developed: adjusted leptin level (ALL: maternal serum leptin level/gestational week).
EFFECT OF TANNIC ACID ON GLUTATHIONE S-TRANSFERASE AND NAD(P)H: QUINONE OXIDOREDUCTASE 1 ENZYMES IN RABBIT LIVER AND KIDNEY
KARAKURT, SERDAR; Adalı, Orhan (2011-01-01)
Glutathione S-transferase and NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 enzymes have important roles in detoxification and also activation of a wide variety of chemicals. Moreover, resistance of tumor cells against chemotherapeutic agents has been implicated in GST activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polyphenolic compound tannic acid on rabbit liver and kidney glutathione S-transferase and NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 enzyme activities. Tannic acid was found to be a potent inhibi...
Context dependent isoform specific PI3K inhibition confers drug resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

Background: Targeted therapies for Primary liver cancer (HCC) is limited to the multi-kinase inhibitors, and not fully effective due to the resistance to these agents because of the heterogeneous molecular nature of HCC developed during chronic liver disease stages and cirrhosis. Although combinatorial therapy can increase the efficiency of targeted therapies through synergistic activities, isoform specific effects of the inhibitors are usually ignored. This study concentrated on PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway and t...

Extracellular nanovesicles, particularly exosomes, can deliver their diverse bioactive biomolecular content, including miRNAs, proteins, and lipids, thus providing a context for investigating the capability of exosomes to induce stem cells toward lineage-specific cells and tissue regeneration. In this study, it is demonstrated that rat subventricular zone neural stem cell-derived exosomes (rSVZ-NSCExo) can control neural-lineage specification of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs).
