Initial crystallization in a nanostructured Al-Sm rare earth alloy
Kalay, Yunus Eren; Chumbley, L. S.; Kramer, M. J.; Anderson, I. E. (Elsevier BV, 2010-06-15)
The transformation kinetics and microstructural evolution during initial crystallization in highly driven Al(90)Sm(10) were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). conventional Cu K(alpha) and high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The highest cooling rate obtained in this study yielded a high number density of fcc-Al nanocrystals, with sizes on the order of 2-5 nm, embedded in a disordered matrix rich in an Al-Sm medium range order ...
Initial stages of SiGe epitaxy on Si(001) studied by scanning tunneling microscopy
Oral, Ahmet (1995-01-20)
We have studied the initial stages of strained SiGe alloy growth on the Si(001)(.)(2 X 1) surface by scanning tunneling microscopy. The Si0.36Ge0.64 alloy was grown on the silicon substrate at various coverages (0.13-3.6 ML) and at different temperatures (similar to 310-470 degrees C). The growth was one dimensional, preferring the direction perpendicular to the underlying silicon dimer rows at low coverages and low temperatures. Anti-phase boundaries were observed to lead multi-layer growth. Strong interac...
Short fatigue crack growth in AL 2024-T3 and AL 7075-T6
Kaynak, Cevdet (Elsevier BV, 1992-01-01)
Short fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated. The crack growth was monitored using a replica technique for cracks propagating on the specimen notch from an initial length of 40-50 mum to the specimen thickness of 2.3 mm. As part of the AGARD round robin test program Al 2024-T3 and Al 7075-T6 specimens with semi-circular notches on one edge were tested under R-ratios of 0.5, 0, -1 and -2. For each R -ratio several stress levels were used. In order to compare the behavior of short and long cracks, the...
Accelerated aging of elastomers in aqueous media
İnaler, Ekrem; Tinçer, Teoman; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2007)
EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer)/PP (Polypropylene) based TPV (Thermoplastic Vulcanizate) was aged in a closed system at stabilized temperature and pressure at 80, 100 and 120oC in distilled water, detergent solution and shiner solution. The variation in properties of TPV upon aging were followed by using DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), tensile testing, Shore A rubber hardness testing. DSC analysis indicated that percent crystallinity of PP component in TPV ...
Early heat evolution in natural pozzolan - incorporated cement hydration
Över, Derya; Tokyay, Mustafa; Erdoğan, Sinan Turhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Portland cement hydration is an exothermic process. The heat evolved during the hydration process is especially important in mass concrete, and hot and cold weather concreting. Heat of hydration is affected by several factors like chemical composition of cement, fineness of cement and ambient temperature. The major aim of this thesis is to investigate the effect of cement composition and fineness, amount and composition of the fine portion (<45 µm) of natural pozzolan-incorporated cement on hydration heat. ...
