First observation of a tau neutrino charged current interaction with charm production in the OPERA experiment OPERA Collaboration
Agafonova, N.; et. al. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-08-01)
An event topology with two secondary vertices compatible with the decay of short-lived particles was found in the analysis of neutrino interactions in the OPERA target. The observed topology is compatible with tau neutrino charged current (CC) interactions with charm production and neutrino neutral current (NC) interactions with cc pair production. However, other processes can mimic this topology. A dedicated analysis was implemented to identify the underlying process. A Monte Carlo simulation was developed...
First basin-wide experimental results on N-2 fixation in the open Mediterranean Sea
Ibello, Valeria; Cozzi, Stefano; Civitarese, Giuseppe (2010-02-09)
The Mediterranean Sea presents several biogeochemical anomalies compared to the global ocean. An unbalanced N budget, high nitrate/phosphate ratios in subsurface waters and low N-15/N-14 ratios in particulate and dissolved nitrogen suggest a significant occurrence of N-2 fixation. This study presents, for the first time, a basin-wide overview of direct measurements of N-2 fixation, with values in the North Atlantic for comparison, during late spring 2007. Very low N-2 fixation rates (0.052 +/- 0.031 nmols N...
First Result from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station: Precision Measurement of the Positron Fraction in Primary Cosmic Rays of 0.5-350 GeV
Aguilar, M.; et. al. (American Physical Society (APS), 2013-04-03)
A precision measurement by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 350 GeV based on 6.8 x 10(6) positron and electron events is presented. The very accurate data show that the positron fraction is steadily increasing from 10 to similar to 250 GeV, but, from 20 to 250 GeV, the slope decreases by an order of magnitude. The positron fraction spectrum shows no fine structure, and the positron to electron r...
First measurement of the underlying event activity at the LHC with root s=0.9 TeV
Khachatryan, V.; et. al. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2010-12-01)
A measurement of the underlying activity in scattering processes with p (T) scale in the GeV region is performed in proton-proton collisions at root s = 0.9 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Charged particle production is studied with reference to the direction of a leading object, either a charged particle or a set of charged particles forming a jet. Predictions of several QCD-inspired models as implemented in PYTHIA are compared, after full detector simulation, to the data. The m...
First-principles calculations for the structural and electronic properties of GaAs1-xPx nanowires
Mohammad, Rezek; Katırcıoğlu, Şenay (2016-03-01)
Structural stability and electronic properties of GaAs1-xPx (0.0 <= x <= 1.0) nanowires (NWs) in zinc-blende (ZB) (similar to 5 <= diameter <= similar to 21 angstrom) and wurtzite (WZ) (similar to 5 <= diameter <= similar to 29 angstrom) phases are investigated by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). GaAs (x = 0.0) and GaP (x = 1.0) compound NWs inWZ phase are found energetically more stable than in ZB structural ones. In the case of GaAs1-xPx alloy NWs, the energetically ...
