Probabilistic assessment of cyclic soil straining in fine-grained soils
Bilge, Habib Tolga; Çetin, Kemal Önder (2008-12-01)
This paper presents a probabilistically-based semi-empirical model for the assessment of cyclically-induced shear and post-cyclic volumetric (reconsolidation) straining of saturated fine-grained soils. Consolidated-undrained, strain-controlled static, and stress-controlled cyclic triaxial tests have been performed on undisturbed silty and clayey samples for the purpose of compiling a database composed of induced maximum cyclic shear and post-cyclic volumetric strains along with Atterberg limits, natural moi...
Probabilistic modeling of failure in rock slopes
Fadlelmula Fadlelseed, Mohamed Mohieldin; Karpuz, Celal; Department of Mining Engineering (2007)
This study presents the results of probabilistic modeling of plane and wedge types of slope failures, based on the ”Advance First Order Second Moment (AFOSM)” reliability method. In both of those failure types, two different failure criteria namely, Coulomb linear and Barton Bandis non-linear failure criteria are utilized in the development of the probabilistic models. Due to the iterative nature of the AFOSM method, analyzing spreadsheets have been developed in order to carry out the computations. The deve...
Quantification of weathering depths in slightly weathered tuffs
Topal, Tamer (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2002-09-01)
Slightly weathered white and pink tuffs of Midas monument have deterioration problems. In this study, depths of the weathering zones developed in the tuffs are investigated through optical microscopy, XRD, chemical analyses, SEM and some index parameters. By examining quantitative weathering indices and comparing them with thin section studies, it is found that thin section analyses of the phenocrysts; LoI and WPI are good indicators to quantify the depth of weathering for the tuffs. However, thin section s...
