Medication errors caused by the mistakes of healthcare professionals are still one of the leading causes of death. The problem is even more serious with the elderly people suffering from multiple health problems at the same time. Clinical recommendation systems can be used to prevent such medication errors. In this paper, we present our clinical recommendation system (RHCS) which generates drug recommendations to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions on treatment process of geriatric patients. Geriatric patients refer to elderly patients aged 65 years or over. One of the distinctive points of our study lies in the methodology used, which is empowering collaborative filtering recommendation approach with historical data of geriatric patients. Its ontology-based approach and compatibility with clinical classification systems also make this study prominent. We evaluated RHCS with different types of evaluation metrics, and the results show that it is promising. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

IMPLEMENTATION OF A PATIENT EMPOWERMENT PLATFORM FOR INTEGRATED CARE
Sarıgül, Bünyamin; Aydın Son, Yeşim; Laleci Ertürkmen, Gökçe Banu; Department of Bioinformatics (2022-2-11)
While the number of chronic disease patients are increasing with the aging population, their complex treatments are a burden in today’s healthcare systems both economically and technically. Integrated care systems are one of the most powerful modern technologies to overcome these difficulties and provide more efficient treatments. Integrated care enables planning the chronic disease treatments in a sustainable and collaborative way for healthcare professionals from various disciplinaries. It also helps care...
Cancer modeling via biologically validated genes
Karakelle, Barış Su; Purutçuoğlu Gazi, Vilda; Ürün, Yüksel (2017-05-10)
The cancer disease is the second most common disease type seen after the frequency of the cardiovascular diseases. The frequency of this genetic disease changes with respect to the gender. Accordingly, the gynecological cancer, which covers ovarian, endometrial or cervical cancer, is the second most common cancer type in women after the breast cancer. Similar to other cancer types, the gynecological cancer is the system disease, meaning that the malfunctions and mutations in the gene regulatory ...
Molecular Biology of Liver Cancer
Tulin, Ersahin; Öztürk, Mehmet; Atalay, Rengül (2015-01-01)
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer‐related mortality worldwide. Recent advances in the molecular profiling of HCC emphasize its intratumoral heterogeneity and reveal how cellular pathways are altered in favor of tumor progression. Malignant transformation of primary liver cancer is achieved through the acquisition of cancer hallmark capabilities that promote the uncontrolled proliferation of hepatocytes. In this review, the characteristics and acquired capabilities of huma...
Upregulation of multi drug resistance genes in doxorubicin resistant human acute myelogeneous leukemia cells and reversal of the resistance
BARAN, YUSUF; Guer, Bala; Kaya, Pelin; Ural, Ali Ugur; Avcu, Ferit; Gündüz, Ufuk (2007-12-01)
The major problem in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients results from multidrug resistance to administered anticancer agents. Drug resistance proteins, MDR1 and MRP1, which work as drug efflux pumps, can mediate the multidrug resistance of human leukemia cells. In this study, the mechanisms of resistance to doxorubicin-induced cell death in human HL60 AML cells were examined.
Alternative Polyadenylation patterns for novel gene discovery and classification in cancer
Beğik, Oğuzhan; Öyken, Merve; Can, Tolga; Erson Bensan, Ayşe Elif (2017-06-03)
Certain aspects of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cancer patients are still important challenges to be addressed. Therefore, we propose a pipeline to uncover patterns of alternative polyadenylation (APA), a hidden complexity in cancer transcriptomes, to further accelerate efforts to discover novel cancer genes and pathways. Here, we analyzed expression data for 1,045 cancer patients and found a significant shift in usage of poly(A) signals in cancers. Using machine-learning techniques, we further def...
