Effects of the eastern Marmara earthquake on marine structures and coastal areas
Yuksel, Y; Alpar, B; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Cevik, E; Ozguven, O; Celikoglu, Y (Thomas Telford Ltd., 2003-06-01)
The eastern Marmara earthquake occurred on 17 August 1999 with an Mw = 7.4 and struck the Izmit Bay and eastern Marmara Sea region, north-west Turkey. The main fault is a single strike-slip fault approximately 140 km long, starting from Sapanca Lake in the east and ending in Izmit Bay in the west. Existing industrial plants and various types of marine structure along the coast of Izmit Bay near this large-magnitude earthquake area provided valuable opportunity to examine the behaviour of marine structures t...
Effects of climate change on water resources in Ömerli basin
Kara, Fatih; Yücel, İsmail; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2014)
This study investigates the impacts of climate change on water resources through precipitation and discharge analyses in Omerli catchment Istanbul, Turkey. Precipitation and temperature data are obtained from GCM (Global Circulation Model)/RCM (Regional Climate Model) combinations based on A1B carbon scenario via Europen Union (EU)-ENSEMBLESproject. The data is obtained at 25 km resolution on daily time scale for reference period between 1960 and 1990 and future period between 2071 and 2100. The HBV (Hydrol...
Effects of abandoned coal mine on the water quality
Tozsin, Gülşen; Arol, Ali İhsan; Duzgun, Sebnem; Soydan, Hilal; Torun, Abdulvahit (2022-02-01)
Improving effective strategies to control acid mine drainage (AMD) in abandoned mine areas is a significant challenge because of water quality issues. AMD is a serious water pollution problem. The water in the area where the mine is located acquires an acidic character, the pH level of the environment decreases, the concentration of heavy metals increases with their dissolution in the acidic environment, and can cause serious environmental pollution by creating a toxic effect for all living things. However,...
Effects of the North Sea Caspian pattern on surface fluxes of Euro-Asian-Mediterranean seas
Gündüz, Müge (American Geophysical Union (AGU), 2005)
The influence of the North Sea Caspian Pattern (NCP) on marine basins of the Euro-Asian-Mediterranean region (Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas) is investigated by making use of Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) analysis. The effect of the NCP on surface fluxes of momentum and heat, as well as on curl and divergence of wind stress is evident in all of the studied basins. In particular, the Aegean and southern Black Sea heat fluxes are significantly affected by NCP. The processes underlying the demons...
Effects of river inputs on particulate organic matter composition and distributions in surface waters and sediments of the Mersin Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean Sea
Akçay, İsmail; Tuğrul, Süleyman; Özhan, Koray (2022-05-01)
Terrestrial inputs-induced eutrophication in the P-depleted Northeastern (NE) Mediterranean shelf waters has led to changes in particulate organic matter (POM) composition and distributions in the water column and surface sediments. The present study aimed to understand the impacts of terrestrial nutrient and POM inputs on coastal eutrophication, bulk POM composition and concentrations in surface waters and sediments of the Mersin Bay, located at the Cilician Basin of NE Mediterranean Sea. The present resul...
