Optimum Properties of Seismic Isolation Systems in Highway Bridges to Minimize Isolator Displacements or Substructure Forces
Dicleli, Murat (null; 2019-07-06)
In this study, closed form equations as functions of the isolator, bridge and ground motion properties are formulated to calculate the optimum characteristic strength, Qd and post-elastic stiffness, kd, of the isolator to minimize the maximum isolator displacement (MID) and force (MIF) for seismic isolated bridges (SIBs). For this purpose, first, sensitivity analyses are conducted to identify the bridge, isolator and ground motion parameters that affect the optimum values of Qd and kd. Next, for the identif...
Optimum design of steel lattice transmission line towers using simulated annealing and PLS-TOWER
Tort, Cenk; Sahin, Serkan; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (2017-01-15)
This paper presents a new optimization tool for automated design of steel lattice transmission line towers in real-world engineering practice. This tool has been developed by integrating the simulated annealing (SA) optimization algorithm into the commercial PLS-TOWER software to optimize steel lattice towers for minimum weight according to ASCE 10-97 design specification using both size and layout design variables. In this context, a novel two-phase SA algorithm is specifically developed and compared with ...
Optimum design of pın-jointed 3-D dome structures using global optimization techniques
Saraç, Yavuz; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
Difficult gradient calculations, converging to a local optimum without exploring the design space adequately, too much dependency on the starting solution, lacking capabilities to treat discrete and mixed design variables are the main drawbacks of conventional optimization techniques. So evolutionary optimization methods received significant interest amongst researchers in the optimization area. Genetic algorithms (GAs) and simulated annealing (SA) are the main representatives of evolutionary optimization m...
Critical analysis of matching schemes in capacitively coupled discharges
Demokan, O (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2003-10-01)
It is shown that, in capacitively coupled radio frequency discharges, the amplitude of the discharge current may not have a unique value for a matching network designed to yield the maximum power transfer. The condition, which may lead to this uncertainty, is derived to avoid the possible, undesired mode of operation.
Optimum design of reinforced concrete plane frames using harmony search algorithm
Akın, Alper; Saka, Mehmet Polat; Department of Engineering Sciences (2010)
In this thesis, the optimum design algorithm is presented for reinforced concrete special moment frames. The objective function is considered as the total cost of reinforced concrete frame which includes the cost of concrete, formwork and reinforcing steel bars. The cost of any component is inclusive of material, fabrication and labor. The design variables in beams are selected as the width and the depth of beams in each span, the diameter and the number of longitudinal reinforcement bars along the span and...
