Morphing wing optimization for steady level flight
Korpe, Durmus S.; Özgen, Serkan (2017-11-01)
This paper presents the basic results of the morphing wing planform optimization of an experimental unmanned air vehicle for minimum drag at steady level flight. The aerodynamic design tool that consists of the three-dimensional panel method, two-dimensional boundary layer solution and generalized reduced gradient method-based optimization is appropriate for fixed wing and morphing wing conceptual and preliminary design. The morphing concept is implemented into the solution with the geometric constraints of...

This paper discusses the conceptual design of a hybrid thin haul air taxi. It presents a design methodology for a distributed propulsive hybrid aircraft highlighting the differences in design procedures between conventional design and hybrid distributed propulsion design. In addition, it demonstrates the impact of both hybridization and distributed propulsion on the reduction of direct operating cost for operators. The aim of the design is to offer a better alternative aircraft to serve the emerging new mar...
Design of smart controllers for hybrid electric vehicles
Özen, Ekin; Dölen, Melik; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
This thesis focuses on the feasibility of designing a commercial hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). In this work, relevant system models are developed for the vehicle including powertrain, braking system, electrical machines and battery. Based on these models ten different HEV configurations are assembled for detailed assessment of fuel consumption. This thesis also proposes a smart power management strategy which could be applied to any kind of HEV configuration. The suggested expert system deals with the exte...
An open source tool to estimate mass and efficiency of wind turbine power take-off systems
Keysan, Ozan (2013-12-01)
This paper presents mass and efficiency estimations for wind turbine drive-train components. Data from literature and commercial catalogues are collected to obtain trend lines for each component. Different gearbox and generator types are investigated as well as the bearing and the low-speed shaft. An open-source tool is presented to compare different power take-off options in terms of weight and efficiency. The datasets and the user interface made available as an open source tool and can be accessed at GitHub.
Semi-supervised iterative teacher-student learning for monocular depth estimation
Süvari, Cemal Barışkan; Halıcı, Uğur; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2021-2-18)
Advances in robotics area and autonomous vehicles have increased the need for accurate depth measurements. Depth estimation is one of the oldest problems of computer vision area. While the depth can be estimated by using many methods, finding a cheap and efficient way of doing it was studied for many years. Although, depth measurements using Lidar sensors or RGB-D cameras provides accurate results, due to cost and narrow applicability they are not very effective. On the other hand, using deep learning archi...
