Hydrothermal-like synthesis of hydroxyapatite from calcium sulfates
Bingöl, Onur Rauf; Durucan, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2010)
Synthesis of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HAp) from commercial grade plaster of paris (CaSO4•0.5H2O, PoP) and gypsum (CaSO4•2H2O) has been performed. HAp synthesis was achieved by reacting 1 M of (NH4)2HPO4 (or 0.5 M of (NH4)2HPO4) solutions with solid calcium sulfate precursors under ambient pressure (1 atm) and hydrothermal-like (2 ± 0.2 atm, 120 °C) conditions. Under ambient conditions, HAp formation kinetics was investigated at 25 °C, 50 °C and 90 °C using 1 M of (NH4)2HPO4 solution. Conversion to H...
Additive Manufacturing of 3-Dimensional Bioceramic Structures Elaborated By Calcium Phosphate Cement Reactions
Sever, Hüseyin Engin; Durucan, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-7-26)
Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) are clinically used in bone related surgical operations for irregular defect filling operations. The cement nature also enables them to be used in additive manufacturing to produce bioceramic structures with irregular shapes and scaffolds with specific geometry, shape and macroporosity, as explored in this thesis. In this study, first a CPC cement precursor, α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP or α-Ca3(PO4)2), is synthesized by using two different powder mixtures of CaHPO4:CaCO3 a...
Reaction kinetics of calcium chloride - ammonia reactive system and theoretical simulation of heat and mass transfer in porous slab pellets
Karakaş Helvacı, Zeynep; Uludağ, Yusuf; Karakaş, Gürkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2023-1-24)
The reactive systems between ammoniated CaCl2 and NH3 were investigated in terms of heat and mass transport phenomena coupled with reaction kinetics. The reversible reaction rate based on the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was suggested to express the net reaction rate, including both the adsorption and desorption terms. Experiments at three temperatures were conducted to evaluate the kinetic parameters, pre-exponential factors, and activation energies. The parameters were evaluated by Non-Linear Regression (NL...
Use of calcium alginate as a coagulant in water treatment
Çoruh, Hale Aylin; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
Coagulation and flocculation processes are important parts of water and wastewater treatment. Coagulation or destabilization of colloidal suspensions results in aggregation of colloidal particles by physical and chemical processes. Flocculation results in the formation of larger and settleable structures by bridging. Alginate, a polysaccharide obtained from marine brown algae, produces a gel structure when mixed with calcium ions, which is expected to be a potential coagulant in water treatment. This study ...
Performance evaluation of Cappadocian tuffs treated with alcohol dispersion of calcium hydroxide nano-particles
Çalışkan, Berkay Barış; Tavukçuoğlu, Ayşe; Saltık, Emine Nevin; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2022-12-08)
In this study, the effect of treatment with alcohol dispersion of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles on controlling excessive water absorption and capillary water suction properties of Cappadocian tuffs was investigated extensively. For this purpose, two tuff types, Göreme Rock (CYT) and Cappadocian Rose (CPT), obtained from a quarry near Avanos-Nevşehir, were examined. Laboratory tests were conducted concerning their basic physical, hygric, mechanical, microstructural, and mineralogical properties bef...
