Seismic resistance of traditional timber-frame hımış structures in Turkey: a brief overview
Aktaş, Yasemin Didem (Informa UK Limited, 2017-1-20)
Himis structures have hardly ever found as extensive a role as other traditional timber housing, such as those originating from Japan or Central Europe, within the wide discourse on the seismic performance of timber-frame architecture that has gained significant momentum in the last few decades owing to advancing testing technologies. While the himis construction technique was perhaps not born as a result of a conscious search for a seismically resistant building form, it was soon widely appreciated for its...
Seismic response of multi-span highway bridges with two-column reinforced concrete bents including foundation and column flexibility
Yılmaz, Taner; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
Seismic design of highway bridges has improved as a result of the experience gained from large earthquakes of the last thirty years. Ductility demand and reserved capacity are extremely important response measures used in new bridge designs to assess target damage levels. However, the application of practical design approaches specified in bridge design codes is not well-defined for bridges over flexible foundations. Within the scope of this research, thirty two bridge models having varying column aspect ra...
Seismic performance of gravity-load designed concrete frames infilled with low-strength masonry
Siddiqui, Umair A.; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Yakut, Ahmet (2015-01-01)
This study compares the seismic performances of two reinforced concrete frame specimens tested by the pseudo-dynamic procedure. The pair of 3-storey, 3-bay frames specimens are constructed with typical characteristics of older construction which is lacking seismic design. One of the specimens is a bare frame while the other is infilled with low-strength autoclave aerated concrete (AAC) block masonry. The focus of this study is to investigate the influence of low strength masonry infill walls on the seismic ...
Seismic performance of multisimple span skew bridges retrofitted with link slabs
Sevgili, Gizem; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
Investigation of more than seventy highway bridges revealed that multisimple-span skew bridges with expansion joints were very common in Turkish practice. The expansion joints, used to provide deck expansion against shrinkage, creep and thermal effects, create costly maintenance problems due to leaked water, impact loads and accumulated debris in the joints. Therefore, elimination of expansion joints decreases the maintenance cost for the bridges. Reinforced concrete link slabs provide continuity at the dec...
