We aimed to develop a new method for the synthesis of liquid crystal templated microparticles. In this study, polydimetylsiloxane (PDMS) masks which have protrusions in micro dimensions were used to template polyvinylalcohol (PVA) microwells. The liquid crystal mixtures of a reactive mesogen (RM257) and a nonreactive liquid crystal (E7) were filled into PVA microwells. The solution was then photopolymerized using a UV light source. After polymerization, microparticles were collected by dissolving PVA microwell mold in water. We characterized the configurations of the LCs and found that two LC defects analogous to the boojum defects in bipolar LC droplets were obtained in LCs confined in circular microwells. After photopolymerization, the particles were subjected to an extraction of the unreacted LCs using ethanol. This step allowed the microparticles to shrink and maintain a hyperbolic paraboloid (saddle) shaped particles consistent with the initial anchoring conditions at the interfaces of the microwells and anisotropic shrinkage of similar systems.[1] Characterization of the particles synthesized at different conditions were done by using polarized microscope. Synthesis of a siloxane polymer with pyrrole end groups has been described. Electrochemical block polymerization of pyrrole through these end groups has been achieved. Characterization of the electrolytic products has been performed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) analyses and FT-IR studies. The effects of different dopant ions, namely, p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) and tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB), i...
Synthesis of silver nanowires through polyol process
Coşkun, Şahin; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2012)
Nanotechnology enabled synthesis of various shapes and morphologies of conventional materials. Nanotubes, nanoparticles, quantum dots and nanowires are the new form of materials. Especially nanowires have gotten great attention due to their unique physical, chemical and optical properties. Superior properties of nanowires are based on their high surface area and two quantum confinement directions. Silver is one of the most conductive metals and it has the highest thermal conductivity. Due to excellent prope...
Synthesis of thienopyridinones via hydrazide-alkyne cyclization
Cokol, Nalan Korkmaz; Erden, Kübra; Gunay, Furkan Melih; Dengiz, Çağatay; Balci, Metin (Elsevier BV, 2020-05-08)
A novel and efficient method for the synthesis of thieno[3,2-c]pyridinones have been developed. The synthetic strategy relies on the synthesis of halothiophene esters utilized as substrates for subsequent Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. Hydrazinolysis of corresponding esters and following hydrazidealkyne ring closure transformations resulted in target thienopyridinones in good yields. It is also shown that pure hydrazine monohydrate is required to facilitate the hydrazide formations.
Synthesis of ZIF-7, ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and ZIF-L from recycled mother liquors
Sahin, Fatma; Topuz, Benia; Kalıpçılar, Halil (2018-05-01)
ZIF-8, ZIF-L, ZIF-7 and ZIF-67 were synthesized from fresh and recycled synthesis solutions. ZIF-8, ZIF-L and ZIF-67 includes Zn2+, while ZIF-67 includes Co2+. ZIF-67 was synthesized in dimethyl formamide, while the others in water. The organic linker was 2-methyl imidazole for ZIF-8, ZIF-L and ZIF-67, and benzimidazole for ZIF-67. The recycling was proceeded two steps for each type of ZIF. For the synthesis in the recycled solutions, the pH and the metal ion content of the mother liquor should be adjusted ...
Synthesis and photoluminescence of ultra-pure germanium nanoparticles
Chivas, R.; Yerci, Selçuk; Li, R.; Dal Negro, L.; Morse, T. F. (2011-09-01)
We have used aerosol deposition to synthesize defect and micro-strain free, ultra-pure germanium nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy images show a core-shell configuration with highly crystalline core material. Powder X-ray diffraction measurements verify the presence of highly pure, nano-scale germanium with average crystallite size of 30 nm and micro-strain of 0.058%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates that GeOx (x <= 2) shells cover the surfaces of the nanoparticles. Under optical ...
