Parametric Design in Urbanism: A Critical Reflection
Çalışkan, Olgu (2017-01-01)
Parametric modelling run by the explicitly defined algorithms generating synchronically auditable dynamic forms and patterns, has become a prominent method especially in architecture. Though the use of parametric models has got wider in urban design, the critical reflection on the actual and possible application of the method in urbanism has fallen limited so far. The paper tends to relate parametric design with the contemporary understanding of urbanism with regards to the idea of design control in the the...
Parametric Urban Design Thinking: Shared Patterns in Design by Algorithm and Design by Drawing
Çalışkan, Olgu; Ongun, Gokhan (2021-12-01)
The paper suggests a focused examination of the processes of drafting-based design and parametric design in urbanism. It discusses how spatial design's settled cognition would differ by using algorithmic systems through the altered relationships between the basic operations in design. To reveal the commonalities and distinctions between the two design methods, the authors present the detailed documentation of the workshop series, which experimented with both techniques within similar design contexts. By the...
Parametric cost estimation system for light rail transit and metro trackworks
Gunduz, Murat; Ugur, Latif Onur; Ozturk, Erhan (Elsevier BV; 2011-03-01)
The main objective of this work is to develop early cost estimation models for light rail transit and metro trackworks using the multivariable regression and artificial neural network approaches. These two approaches were applied to a data set of 16 projects by using 17 parameters available at the early design phase. The regression analysis estimated the cost of testing samples with an error of 2.32%. On the other hand, artificial neural network estimated the cost with 5.76% error, which was slightly higher...
Parametric Range Estimating of Building Costs Using Regression Models and Bootstrap
Sönmez, Rifat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2008-12-01)
This paper presents a bootstrap approach for integration of parametric and probabilistic cost estimation techniques. In the proposed method, a combination of regression analysis and bootstrap resampling technique is used to develop range estimates for construction costs. The method is applied to parametric range estimation of building projects as an example. The bootstrap approach includes advantages of probabilistic and parametric estimation methods, at the same time it requires fewer assumptions compared ...
Parametric and posterior Cramér-Rao lower bounds for extended target tracking in a random matrix framework
Sarıtaş, Elif; Orguner, Umut; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
This thesis presents the parametric and posterior Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLB) for extended target tracking (ETT) in a random matrix framework. ETT is an area of target tracking in which the common assumption of point targets does not hold due to the recent improvements in sensor technology. With the increased sensor capability, targets can generate more than one measurement in a single scan depending on their size. Therefore, not only the target’s kinematical state but also its extension can be estimated...
