Log-periodic antenna design using electromagnetic simulations
Ergül, Özgür Salih (2003-06-27)
Log-periodic (LP) antennas are important because of their ability to show nearly frequency independent characteristics over wide bands of frequencies, although they have relatively simple geometries. It is essential to complement theoretical antenna design recipes with the numerical results obtained from electromagnetic simulations. We demonstrate the benefit of such a hybrid procedure using the design of an LP antenna as a case study. It is shown that significant performance improvements can be obtained by...
Block-based methods for the reconstruction of finite-length signals from nonuniform samples
Tuncer, Temel Engin (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2007-02-01)
Two novel block-based algorithms are presented for the reconstruction of uniform samples given the nonuniform samples. The first algorithm uses a sinc interpolator whereas the second one uses a DFT-based interpolator. It is shown that the proposed algorithms are stable and the error due to noise and sampling jitter is bounded by the corresponding error norms of noise and jitter, respectively. We show that both of the block-based algorithms provide nearly perfect reconstruction for a class of practically tim...

Model Order Reduction for Pattern Formation in FitzHugh-Nagumo Equations
Karasözen, Bülent; Kucukseyhan, Tugba (2015-09-18)
We developed a reduced order model (ROM) using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to compute efficiently the labyrinth and spot like patterns of the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FNH) equation. The FHN equation is discretized in space by the discontinuous Galerkin (dG) method and in time by the backward Euler method. Applying POD-DEIM (discrete empirical interpolation method) to the full order model (FOM) for different values of the parameter in the bistable nonlinearity, we show that using few POD and DEIM modes...
Approximate Fisher Kernels of Non-iid Image Models for Image Categorization
Cinbiş, Ramazan Gökberk; Schmid, Cordelia (2016-06-01)
The bag-of-words (BoW) model treats images as sets of local descriptors and represents them by visual word histograms. The Fisher vector (FV) representation extends BoW, by considering the first and second order statistics of local descriptors. In both representations local descriptors are assumed to be identically and independently distributed (iid), which is a poor assumption from a modeling perspective. It has been experimentally observed that the performance of BoW and FV representations can be improved...
