Performance assessment of RC frames with HCT brick infill walls rehabilitated with MRM by using pseudo dynamic test protocols

© 2013 Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. All rights reserved.Recently in Turkey, like in the other countries located in high-seismicity zones, strengthening of brick infill walls of reinforced concrete frames has become of more interest for researchers. Application of mesh reinforcement with mortar on existing brick infill walls of reinforced concrete (RC) frames is one of recommended seismic strengthening procedures in the Turkish Seismic Code (2007). This method is easy to apply and also helps to eliminate the out-of-plane failure of existing infill walls. In this study, the performance of the mesh reinforced mortar (MRM) application was investigated by pseudo-dynamic (PsD) test protocols. A pre-damaged three-story-three-bay ½ scale RC frame with hollow clay tile (HCT) infills in the middle bay was selected. The test specimen was a code compliant specimen. No significant damage besides some flexural and shear cracking in columns, crushing and collapse of the infill walls was the initial damage state of the specimen. After removing the infill walls of the central bay, new HCT walls strengthened with MRM were built and the rehabilitated frame was tested using continuous pseudo-dynamic test method for two synthetic ground motions compatible with Düzce city center response spectrum. The paper reports the seismic response of the test frame under applied loadings.

Performance Assessment of Turkish Residential Buildings for Seismic Damage and Loss Estimation
Un, Elif M.; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül (2015-04-01)
This study aims to present an integrated method in a probabilistic manner for seismic performance assessment of Turkish residential buildings, which can be used as a tool to estimate earthquake losses due to structural damage. In particular, the objective is to determine the performances of different types of residential buildings for predicting the potential seismic loss in terms of casualties (death toll) for a highly populated city in northwestern Turkey. The main phases of this study are seismic hazard,...
Ground motion simulations based on regional input parameters and their impact on insurance premiums: Bursa case
Ünal, Barış; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Kestel, Sevtap Ayşe; Department of Earthquake Studies (2015)
Determination of earthquake parameters are required for earthquake resistant design and retrofitting of exsisting structures. There are not many options to obtain earthquake data for regions with no or sparce earthquake recordings. Even though some methods are aplicable to these regions they generate only peak ground motion parameters. For cases that require the full ground motion simulations are necessary. Simulations can also be used for gaining knowledge about source, path and site effects. In this study...
Forced Vibration Testing and Seismic Fragility Assessment of Instrumented Structures (FORAGAINST)
Çelik, Ozan Cem(2016-2-07)
The objectives of this proposed research are to perform forced vibration tests on the following reinforced concrete structures, which are permanently instrumented for recording their dynamic responses in the case of future earthquakes in Turkey: a four-story dormitory building in Bolu, a four-story office building in Istanbul, a five-story hospital building in Antakya, a three-story school building in Antakya, and a four-story university building in Izmir, and to derive seismic fragilities for these structu...
Structural rehabilitation of damaged RC buildings after the 1 october 1995 Dinar earthquake
Wasti, ST; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Utku, M (2001-04-01)
This paper contains technical information related to the Dinar project for the rehabilitation of moderately damaged reinforced concrete buildings after the 1 October 1995 Dinar earthquake. The structural appraisal of the damaged buildings, analytical studies leading to decisions regarding structural rehabilitation or demolition, the supervision on site of the rehabilitation and the overall coordination of the project was entrusted to the Middle East Technical University Earthquake Engineering Research Cente...
Seismic fragilities for non-ductile reinforced concrete frames - Role of aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties
Çelik, Ozan Cem (2010-01-01)
Seismic fragilities are essential to earthquake loss estimation and performance-based earthquake engineering in regions of high seismicity. Construction practices for frames in regions of moderate seismicity are quite different, and such frames have received less attention in the literature. Fragilities for performance levels identified in recent seismic regulations are developed herein for reinforced concrete frames designed for gravity load in low-seismic regions using probabilistic non-linear finite elem...
