Epigenetic Mechanisms Underlying the Dynamic Expression of Cancer-Testis Genes, PAGE2, -2B and SPANX-B, during Mesenchymal-to-Epithelial Transition

Cancer-testis (CT) genes are expressed in various cancers but not in normal tissues other than in cells of the germline. Although DNA demethylation of promoter-proximal CpGs of CT genes is linked to their expression in cancer, the mechanisms leading to demethylation are unknown. To elucidate such mechanisms we chose to study the Caco-2 colorectal cancer cell line during the course of its spontaneous differentiation in vitro, as we found CT genes, in particular PAGE2, -2B and SPANX-B, to be up-regulated duri...
Etiology of senile osteoporosis - A hypothesis
Atik, O. Sahap; Uslu, M. Murad; Eksioglu, Fatih; Satana, Tolgay (Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health), 2006-02-01)
Osteoporosis is a major health problem characterized by compromised bone strength predisposing patients to an increased risk of fracture. It may cause morbidity and mortality in elderly men and women. The etiologic factors that lead to senile osteoporosis still are unclear.
Epistemology of problem solving and an annotation framework for collaborative problem solving environments
Kaya, Tunç Güven; Çakır, Murat Perit; Bağçe, Samet; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2015)
Problem solving can be summarized as the activities that a subject performs when confronted with a problem. The behavioral and cognitive processes underlying these activities have been first studied by psychologists and then cognitive scientists since the beginning of the 20th century. The studies mostly focused on the psychology, philosophy and AI perspectives of problem solving activity. However, epistemological and collaborrative aspects of human problem solving have not been emphasized in related cognit...
Associative behaviour and effect of functional groups on the fluorescence of graphene oxide
Ozcan, Sefika; Vempati, Sesha; Çırpan, Ali; Uyar, Tamer (Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), 2018-01-01)
We have juxtaposed the structural, vibrational and emission properties of graphene oxide (GO) with various degrees of reduction with and without a model dispersant, unveiling a strong associative behavior between GO sheets and the influence of H-bonds. The interlayer spacings are similar to 0.84 and 0.78 nm for the as prepared and reduced samples. -OH groups are predominantly effected by the photo-thermal reduction. Also we note some regeneration of > C=O and -COOH groups in reduced samples. Clear changes t...
