Significance of carbon to nitrogen ratio on the long-term stability of continuous photofermentative hydrogen production
Androga, Dominic Deo; Ozgur, Ebru; Eroglu, Inci; Gündüz, Ufuk; Yucel, Meral (2011-12-01)
The stable and optimized operation of photobioreactors (PBRs) is the most challenging task in photofermentative biological hydrogen production. The carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) in the feed is a critical parameter that significantly influences microbial growth and hydrogen production. In this study, the effects of changing the C/N ratio to achieve stable biomass and continuous hydrogen production using fed-batch cultures of Rhodobacter capsulatus YO3 (uptake hydrogenase deleted, hup-) were investigated. Th...
Importance of H2O2/Fe2+ ratio in Fenton's treatment of a carpet dyeing wastewater
Gulkaya, Ipek; Surucu, Gulerman A.; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (2006-08-25)
The effectiveness of the Fenton's reagent (H2O2/Fe2+) in the treatment of carpet dyeing wastewater was investigated under different operational conditions, namely, H2O2 and FeSO4 concentrations, initial pH and temperature. Up to 95% COD removal efficiency was attained using 5.5 g/l FeSO4 and 385 g/l H2O2 at a pH of 3, temperature of 50 degrees C. The H2O2/Fe2+ ratio (g/g) was found to be between 95 and 290 for maximum CO removal. It was noteworthy that, keeping H2O2/Fe2+ ratio constant within the range of 9...

Importance of Soil-Bridge Interaction Modelling in Seismic Analysis of Seismic Isolated Bridges
Dicleli, Murat; Mansour, Mohamad (null; 2004-08-01)
The effect of soil-structure interaction on the seismic performance of seismic-isolated bridges is studied. For this purpose, two typical seismically isolated bridges are selected. The selected bridges have distinct features to represent those bridges with (i) heavy superstructure and light substructure and (ii) light superstructure and heavy substructure. Detailed structural models of both bridges excluding and including the soil-structure interaction effects are first constructed. Iterative multi-mode res...
Contribution of boron compounds and nanoclays on the flame retardancy of aluminium diethylphosphinate in neat and fiber reinforced polyamide-6
Polat, Osman; Kaynak, Cevdet; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2014)
The main objective of this dissertation was to investigate contribution of three different boron compounds and nanoclays to the flame retardancy of polyamide-6 and its 15 wt% short glass fiber reinforced composite with and without an organophosphorus flame retardant aluminum diethylphosphinate. All material combinations and nanocomposites were compounded by melt mixing method via twin-screw extruder and the specimens for testing and analyses were shaped by injection and compression molding. In the first par...
