Harmony Search Algorithms in Structural Engineering

2011-06-01
Contemporary design in engineering and industry relies heavily on computer simulation and efficient algorithms to reduce the cost and to maximize the performance and sustainability as well as profits and energy efficiency. Solving an optimization problem correctly and efficiently requires not only the right choice of optimization algorithms and simulation methods, but also the proper implementation and insight into the problem of interest. This book consists of ten self-contained, detailed case studies of real-world optimization problems, selected from a wide range of applications and contributed from worldwide experts who are working in these exciting areas. Optimization topics and applications include gas and water supply networks, oil field production optimization, microwave engineering, aerodynamic shape design, environmental emergence modelling, structural engineering, waveform design for radar and communication systems, parameter estimation in laser experiment and measurement, engineering materials and network scheduling. These case studies have been solved using a wide range of optimization techniques, including particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithms, artificial bee colony, harmony search, adaptive error control, derivative-free pattern search, surrogate-based optimization, variable-fidelity modelling, as well as various other methods and approaches. This book is a practical guide to help graduates and researchers to carry out optimization for real-world applications. More advanced readers will also find it a helpful reference and aide memoire.

Trade-off models in sustainable system engineering
Özaslan, Mustafa Onur; Azizoğlu, Meral; Department of Industrial Engineering (2009)
Prior to concerns of sustainability, almost all industrial engineering models tried to minimize cost or maximize profit. Sustainability awareness has recently forced the decision makers to also take into consideration such aspects as clean water use, or carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to incorporate more aspects of sustainability in optimizing production efforts, we present a network model to handle trade-offs among dissimilar sustainability criteria. Since typically there are alternative choices for...
Structured neural networks for modeling and identification of nonlinear mechanical systems
Kılıç, Ergin; Dölen, Melik; Koku, Ahmet Buğra; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
Most engineering systems are highly nonlinear in nature and thus one could not develop efficient mathematical models for these systems. Artificial neural networks, which are used in estimation, filtering, identification and control in technical literature, are considered as universal modeling and functional approximation tools. Unfortunately, developing a well trained monolithic type neural network (with many free parameters/weights) is known to be a daunting task since the process of loading a specific pat...
Optimization of time-cost-resource trade-off problems in project scheduling using meta-heuristic algorithms
Bettemir, Önder Halis; Sönmez, Rifat; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
In this thesis, meta-heuristic algorithms are developed to obtain optimum or near optimum solutions for the time-cost-resource trade-off and resource leveling problems in project scheduling. Time cost trade-off, resource leveling, single-mode resource constrained project scheduling, multi-mode resource constrained project scheduling and resource constrained time cost trade-off problems are analyzed. Genetic algorithm simulated annealing, quantum simulated annealing, memetic algorithm, variable neighborhood ...
Dynamic optimization of long term primary electric distribution network investments based on planning metrics
Tor, Osman Bulent; CEBECI, Mahmut Erkut; KOC, Mehmet; Güven, Ali Nezih (2018-01-01)
This paper presents methodologies of dynamic planning algorithms which are developed for optimizing long-term primary electric distribution network investments taking into account some planning metrics. First, an algorithm which calculates a representative primary network model of distribution grids whose primary and secondary networks are intricate is developed. It is aimed to facilitate assessment of primary distribution network investment requirements and thereby defining grid investment candidates effec...
Optimum design of steel space frames via bat inspired algorithm
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (null; 2013-05-19)
Design optimization of steel space frames is a very popular topic in structural engineering due to economy saved in cost of the structures by optimization process. Although the final cost of a steel frame is affected by many factors, such as material, manufacturing, erection and transportation costs, the material cost of steel comprises a great deal of overall cost of the structure. Hence, the design optimization of steel frames is focused on weight minimization in the literature based on the assumption tha...
