Revenue Management vs. Newsvendor Decisions: Does Behavioral Response Mirror Normative Equivalence?
KOCABIYIKOĞLU, AYŞE; GÖĞÜŞ, CELİLE ITIR; Gönül, Mustafa Sinan (2015-05-01)
We study and compare decision-making behavior under the newsvendor and the two-class revenue management models, in an experimental setting. We observe that, under both problems, decision makers deviate significantly from normative benchmarks. Furthermore, revenue management decisions are consistently higher compared to the newsvendor order quantities. In the face of increasing demand variability, revenue managers increase allocations; this behavior is consistent with normative patterns when the ratio of the...
Profit maximizing shipment consolidation with uncertain shipment requests
Öztürk, Ergin; Savaşaneril Tüfekci, Seçil; Yüksel Özkaya, Banu; Department of Industrial Engineering (2022-8)
In this study, a profit maximizing shipment consolidation problem is under consideration. There are multiple shippers characterized by uncertain shipment requests, who consolidate their orders and make dispatch decisions jointly, in order to maximize total profit. The problem is modeled as a continuous-time Markov Decision Process. For the two-shipper setting the structure of the optimal policy is characterized under certain conditions. For the multiple-shipper setting obtaining the optimal policy is diffic...
Profit-oriented disassembly line balancing with stochastic task times in hybrid lines
Gümüşkaya, Volkan; Bayındır, Zeynep Pelin; Altekin, Tevhide; Department of Industrial Engineering (2013)
We offer a solution approach for profit-oriented disassembly line balancing problem in hybrid lines with stochastic task times. When task times are stochastic, there is a probability that some of the tasks are not completed within the predefined cycle time. For task incompletions, the most commonly used remedial actions are stopping the line or offline repairs. Stopping the line is to stop the line until the incomplete tasks are completed, while in offline repair, incomplete tasks are completed in an offlin...
Value-based risk management in defense projects pricing with a robust optimization approach
Aker, Kerime Özge; Meral, Fatma Sedef; Department of Industrial Engineering (2015)
In this study, we address the bid pricing problem of a defense company facing with supply chain and financial risks due to long-term project planning. Creating shareholder value has become a quite popular topic in business as value-adding companies are the only ones to survive in the market. We formulate the problem as a value-based performance and risk management model through robust optimization approach in order to cope with various ambiguities over project lifecycle with possible discrete scenario set. ...
Route planning for unmanned air vehicles
Tulum, Kamil; İder, S. Kemal; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
In this thesis, automatic routing technologies for unmanned air vehicles are investigated. A route planner that minimizes the fuel consumption and maximizes the survivability is developed. While planning the route, using more than one objective entails the auto-routing problem to multi-objective optimization considerations. In this work, these considerations are handled with search algorithms. In order to assess the route options, a fuel consumption model and a survivability model are utilized for the route...
