THE ROLE OF RANDOM NOISE ON EFFORTS IN GROUP CONTESTS
İNTİŞAH, Merve; Büyükboyacı Hanay, Mürüvvet İlknur; Department of Economics (2022-2)
We theoretically and experimentally study the effect of random noise on effort level in individual and three different types of group contests: perfect-substitutes, best-shot, and weakest-link. Subjects compete for either a high prize value or a low prize value in individual contests. The theoretical model shows that individual effort increases with prize value but decreases with noise variance. Our experiment finds that in individual contests, subjects who compete for a low prize decrease their efforts as ...

The influence of the context of conditional probability problems on probabilistic thinking: A case study with teacher candidates
Olgun, Beyza; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (null; 2019-02-10)
This study investigates the influence of the context of conditional probability problems on probabilistic thinking processes of mathematics teacher candidates. Data were collected from four mathematics teacher candidates through semi-structured clinical interviews. Teacher candidates were expected to solve and explain three conditional probability problems, which were selected based on specific contexts. The findings revealed that, when the context is related to a social issue such as health or justice, tha...

The scope of auctions in the presence of downstream interactions and information externalities
Koska, Ahmet Onur; Onur, Ilke; Staehler, Frank (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2018-10-01)
We scrutinize the scope of auctions for firm acquisitions in the presence of downstream interactions and information externalities. We show that no mechanism exists that allows an investor to acquire a low-cost firm under incomplete information: a separating auction implies adverse selection and relies substantially on commitment to allocation and transfer rules. A pooling auction serves as a commitment device against ex-post opportunistic behavior and alleviates adverse selection. It can earn the investor ...
