Effect of Channel Bed Corrugations on Hydraulic Jump
Tokyay, Nuray (2005-05-15)
There have been many investigations on the effect of roughness elements on physical parameters of hydraulic jump. In practice, baffle blocks and sills are commonly being used to stabilize the location of a jump and shorten the length of a stilling basin. On the other hand, corrugations which cover the entire length of the basin may be an alternative. In the present study, hydraulic jumps on corrugated channel beds are studied experimentally. Values of 0.20 and 0.26 were used as the wave steepness of corruga...
Effect of coarse aggregate size on interfacial cracking under uniaxial compression
Akcaoglu, T; Tokyay, Mustafa; Celik, T (2002-12-01)
The effects of aggregate type and size are important parameters in the formation of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) structure and subsequently in the failure process of concrete. The influence of surface, rigidity and size of aggregates and water/cement (w/c) ratio of the matrix on bond strength at the ITZ and the interrelationship between the bond and the matrix in the failure process of concrete under uniaxial compression were studied. For this purpose a series of experiments were designed and carried o...
Effect of Passive Bleeding on Flow Structure over a Nonslender Delta Wing
Celik, Alper; Cetin, Cenk; Yavuz, Mehmet Metin (2017-08-01)
The effect of passive bleeding on flow structure of a 45 deg swept delta wing is studied in a low-speed wind tunnel using techniques of laser-illuminated smoke visualization, surface-pressure measurements, and particle image velocimetry. Three different bleeding configurations are tested to identify the effectiveness of the control technique compared to a base planform for a broad range of attack angles 6 <= alpha <= 6deg at Reynolds numbers Re=3.5x10(4) and Re=10(5). The results indicate that all bleeding ...
Effect of soil arching on lateral soil pressures acting upon rigid retaining walls
Aydın Ertuğrul, Nihan; Çokça, Erdal; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Retaining walls are encountered in various fields of civil engineering. In many practical applications, the earth pressure against rigid retaining walls are calculated using either Coulomb’s or Rankine’s lateral earth pressure theories. For the sake of simplicity, it is assumed that the lateral earth pressure distribution is linear; however, many experimental results indicated it is significantly nonlinear. Previous physical modeling studies indicated that this nonlinearity results from arching behavior ind...
Effect of stress assisted aging on superelastic behavior of a hot-rolled niti shape memory alloy
Sargın, Irmak; Bor, Şakir; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2011)
Effect of stress-assisted aging on stress induced martensitic transformation in hot-rolled Ni-rich 50.7at. Ni%-Ti alloy has been investigated. Alloys are aged freely and under 20 MPa, 100 MPa, and 200 MPa stress at 400 o C for 90 minutes. Aging procedure affected both stress-induced and thermally induced transformation behavior. Superelasticity behavior is correlated with the multistep transformation in aged Ni-rich NiTi alloys and the aging stress level is found to be effective. Relative to the free aged a...
