In this study, we consider two different approaches for assortment planning and shelf space allocation for a retailer. The first approach is a joint one where both problems are solved in a single iteration. The second approach, widely studied in the literature, considers two problems successively. The results are tested using real data with respect to several performance measures. The proposed methods are also compared with the results of a commercial package widely used in practice

Optimal pricing and production decisions in reusable container systems
Atamer, Büşra; Bakal, İsmail Serdar; Department of Industrial Engineering (2010)
In this study, we focus on pricing and production decisions in reusable container systems with stochastic demand. We consider a producer that sells a single product to the customers in reusable containers with two supply options: (i) brand-new containers, (ii) returned containers from customers. Customers purchasing the products may return the containers to the producer to receive a deposit price. The return quantity depends on both customer demand and the deposit price determined by the producer. Hence, th...
Profit maximizing shipment consolidation with uncertain shipment requests
Öztürk, Ergin; Savaşaneril Tüfekci, Seçil; Yüksel Özkaya, Banu; Department of Industrial Engineering (2022-8)
In this study, a profit maximizing shipment consolidation problem is under consideration. There are multiple shippers characterized by uncertain shipment requests, who consolidate their orders and make dispatch decisions jointly, in order to maximize total profit. The problem is modeled as a continuous-time Markov Decision Process. For the two-shipper setting the structure of the optimal policy is characterized under certain conditions. For the multiple-shipper setting obtaining the optimal policy is diffic...
Multi-channel retailing with product differentiation
Uğur, Havva Gülçin; Karaer, Özgen; Department of Industrial Engineering (2015)
In this study, we analyze a monopolist retailer’s product differentiation problem in a multi-channel environment. We investigate the type of conditions that would motivate retailer to open an outlet branch, to open an online channel, and to even potentially open an online channel for the outlet branch, and how these decisions interact with each other. We use quality and price as the primary drivers in the outlet business decision in a vertical differentiation model. In the outlet business decision, specific...
Optimal pricing and production decisions in utilizing reusable containers
Atamer, Busra; Bakal, İsmail Serdar; Bayındır, Zeynep Pelin (2013-06-01)
In this study, we focus on pricing and production decisions in utilizing reusable containers with stochastic customer demand. We consider a manufacturer that sells a single product to the customers in reusable containers with two supply options: (i) brand-new containers and (ii) returned containers from customers. The return quantity depends on both customer demand and the acquisition fee determined by the manufacturer. The unit cost of production using brand-new containers is different than the unit cost o...
Joint quantity flexibility for multiple products in a decentralized supply chain
Karakaya, Selcuk; Bakal, İsmail Serdar (2013-02-01)
In this study, we analyze a decentralized supply chain with a single retailer and a single manufacturer where the retailer sells multiple products in a single period. The products differ in terms of a limited number of features only. The retailer places initial orders based on preliminary demand forecasts at the beginning of the period and has an opportunity to modify its initial order after receiving perfect demand information. However, the final orders of the retailer are constrained by its initial orders...
