Solution Strategies of a Teacher Candidate Rediscovering Numbers in Base Eight

Up to today, many of the studies mostly investigated students' understanding of natural numbers rather than preservice teachers’. This study conducts a case study in order to investigate a preservice teacher's understanding of natural numbers and operations on them. The preservice teachers, who were enrolled in a senior year course in an elementary mathematics education department, used materials for natural numbers that aimed to teach the concepts and operations using base eight instead of customarily used base ten for a period. This way, preservice teachers had a chance to develop different strategies for the operations that they memorized in base ten and their thinking ways are investigated during the solution of operations. The results reveal that using different base supports preservice teachers to change their thinking style and interpret the problems from a different perspective without doing any memorization.

In-service elementary mathematics teachers' conceptions of histogram and difficulties about its teaching process
Ulusoy, Fadime; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (2013-10-08)
The aim of this study was to examine in-service elementary mathematics teachers’ conceptions of histogram and their difficulties about its teaching process. By using purposeful sampling method, participants were selected as six in-service elementary mathematics teachers teaching at different private or government schools in Ankara. Data was obtained via a semi-structured interview form which was prepared by the researchers. The interviews were conducted individually and recorded with a voice recorder. The r...
An Investigation of pre-service middle school mathematics teachers‟ ability to connect the mathematics in content courses with the middle school mathematics
Dilberoğlu, Merve; Haser, Çiğdem; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2015)
This study investigated if and how preservice middle school mathematics teachers related the mathematical knowledge addressed in general mathematics content courses in a four-year teacher education program to their future teaching of middle school mathematics. The study involved two interrelated sections. On one hand, preservice middle school mathematics teachers' views on the issue were gathered through asking open-ended questions via a semi-structured interview protocol. On the other hand, their performan...
Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2011-07-06)
In this study we aimed to examine prospective elementary mathematics teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching. More specifically, our aim was to understand whether the Teaching Method Course had an effect on prospective mathematics teachers' mathematical knowledge. The study was conducted with 31 prospective elementary mathematics teachers in a large public university in Ankara, Turkey in 2010-2011 fall semester. To collect data, a survey instrument including 5 open-ended questions was developed by the...
Analyzing collective efficacy of preservice science teachers in science methods course
Atasoy, Volkan; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Educational Sciences (2016)
This study was aimed to examine preservice teachers who work in the same group in terms of collective efficacy. The participants of this study were four preservice science teachers in third year of science teacher education program. This study was conducted in science methods course. In this course, the participants as a group were expected to prepare lesson plans according to newly learned science teaching methods during a semester. Interviews, observation, preservice teachers’ critique papers, lesson plan...
The interaction between middle school mathematics teachers’ beliefs and pedagogical content knowledge regarding rational numbers
Bulut, Aykut; Akyüz, Didem; Haser, Çiğdem; Department of Elementary Education (2021-7)
The aim of this study was to investigate middle school mathematics teachers’ PCK regarding rational numbers and their mathematics-related beliefs, and to understand the nature of the possible interaction between their PCK and beliefs. Data of the study were collected by (i) observation of six middle school mathematics teachers’ lessons about fractions and/or rational numbers content, (ii) two rounds of semi structured interviews, and (iii) vignettes. Data about their PCK were analyzed qualitatively with the...
