This paper presents design and fabrication of a MEMS-based thin film piezoelectric transducer to be placed on an eardrum for fully-implantable cochlear implant (FICI) applications. Resonating at a specific frequency within the hearing band, the transducer senses eardrum vibration and generates the required voltage output for the stimulating circuitry. Moreover, high sensitivity of the sensor, 391.9 mV/Pa @900 Hz, decreases the required power for neural stimulation. The transducer provides highest voltage ou...
Thin film thermoelectric energy harvesters for MEMS micropower generation
Topal, Emre Tan; Külah, Haluk; Muhtaroglu, Ali (2010-12-01)
In this study, we propose a novel thin film thermoelectric energy harvester design based on Cr-Ni thermocouples overlayed on top of a suspended parylene diaphragm. The TE energy harvester can be used to harvest excess heat energy generated at the hot spots in a computer platform. The design can be merged with the previously reported EM energy harvester within a MEMS device to scavenge energy from both vibrations and thermals in a hybrid mode of operation. The performance evaluation of the MEMS integrated th...
Thin film piezoelectric acoustic transducer for fully implantable cochlear implants
Ilık, Bedirhan; Koyuncuoglu, Aziz; Sardan-Sukas, Ozlem; Külah, Haluk (Elsevier BV, 2018-09-01)
This paper reports the development of a single cantilever thin film PLD-PZT transducer prototype. The device was experimentally characterized by attaching it on an acoustically vibrating membrane resembling the behavior of the eardrum. Acceleration characteristic of the sensor attached on the membrane was obtained by using a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) as the output voltage was measured by an oscilloscope. A voltage output of 114 mV was obtained, when the device was excited at 110 dB Sound Pressure Level...
Thin film (6,5) semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube metamaterial absorber for photovoltaic applications
Obaidullah, Madina; Esat, Volkan; Sabah, Cumali (2017-12-01)
A wide-band (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotube metamaterial absorber design with near unity absorption in the visible and ultraviolet frequency regions for solar cell applications is proposed. The frequency response of the proposed design provides wide-band with a maximum of 99.2% absorption. The proposed design is also simulated with (5,4), (6,4), (7,5), (9,4), and (10,3) chiralities, and results are compared to show that the proposed design works best with (6,5) carbon nanotube (CNT) but also good for ot...
Thin films of hard cubic Zr3N4 stabilized by stress
Chhowalla, M; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah (Nature Materials, 2005-04-01)
Hard, refractory thin films consisting of group IVB element mono-nitrides deposited using various chemical and physical vapour-deposition techniques are widely used in wear-resistant applications. As the demand for performance exceeds the capabilities of existing materials, new materials with superior properties must be developed. Here we report the realization and characterization of hard cubic Zr3N4 (c-Zr3N4) thin films. The films, deposited using a novel but industrially viable modified filtered cathodic...
