Fluctuation-induced Neel and Bloch skyrmions at topological insulator surfaces
Nogueira, Flavio S.; Eremin, Ilya; Katmis, Ferhat; Moodera, Jagadeesh S.; van den Brink, Jeroen; Kravchuk, Volodymyr P. (2018-08-03)
Ferromagnets in contact with a topological insulator have become appealing candidates for spintronics due to the presence of Dirac surface states with spin-momentum locking. Because of this, bilayer Bi2Se3-EuS structures, for instance, show a finite magnetization at the interface at temperatures well exceeding the Curie temperature of bulk EuS. Here, we determine theoretically the effective magnetic interactions at a topological insulator-ferromagnet interface above themagnetic ordering temperature. We show...
Colliding gravitational plane waves : bell-szekeres solution
Cambaz, Efsun; Karasu, Atalay; Department of Physics (2005)
The collision of pure electromagnetic plane waves with collinear polarization in Einstein-Maxwell theory and the collision of gravitational plane waves in vacuum Einstein theory are studied. The singularity structure of the Bell-Szekeres and the Szekeres solutions is examined by using curvature invariants. As a final work, the collision of the plane waves in dilaton gravity theory is studied and also the singularity structure of the corresponding space-time is examined.
Fragility analysis of flat-slab structures
Erberik, Murat Altuğ (2004-06-01)
Flat-slab RC buildings exhibit several advantages over conventional moment-resisting frames. However, the structural effectiveness of flat-slab construction is hindered by its alleged inferior performance under earthquake loading. Although flat-slab systems are widely used in earthquake prone regions of the world, fragility curves for this type of construction are not available in the literature. This study focuses on the derivation of such fragility curves using medium-rise flat-slab buildings with masonry...
Fragility of a shear wall building with torsional irregularity
Akansel, Vesile Hatun; Gülkan, Polat; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
Buildings with torsional irregularity represent the main focus of many current investigations. However, despite this volume of research, there is no established framework that describes adequately the seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete shear wall systems. In this study, the three-dimensional behavior of a particular shear-wall structure under earthquake effects was examined with regard to the nonlinear behavior of the reinforced concrete assembly and the parameters that characterize the structure ...
Incipient motion of coarse solitary particles
Gülcü, Besim; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
In this study the incipient motion of coarse solitary particles having different specific weights and shapes was investigated. A tilting flume of rectangular cross-section having a net working length of 12 m was used through the experiments. The slope of the channel and the discharge in the channel are the two basic variable parameters that determine the initiation of motion. Particles made of cement and mixture of cement and iron dust in certain ratios were used in the experiments with an obstructing eleme...
