Since 1994 Afrikaners have been engaged in the process of redefining their place and their role in the 'new South Africa'. In this process elements of their culture - among them cultural/historical symbols, music, historical events and personalities - have been utilised in the effort to forge a new understanding of Afrikaner identity to fit the radically changed circumstances in which they find themselves. The current Afrikaner experience of accommodation to new realities has its parallels with that of white southerners in the United States following the defeat of the Confederacy in 1865 and the end of segregation in the mid-20th century. Although there are clearly some significant differences, the similarities of how the two groups have used elements of their culture and history, and the responses of non-whites, are striking. In addition, the experience of southern accommodation may offer some insight into how the Afrikaners may adjust and adapt to the new South Africa.

Gray's value-puralism: a critical analysis
Parmaksız, Abdullah Umut; Üstüner, Fahriye ; Department of Psychology (2007)
In this study, John Gray’s theory of value-pluralism is critically analyzed. Gray’s modus vivendi, based on Isaiah Berlin’s criticism of monism, is a theory that aims to create the conditions in which peace and diversity in late-modern societies can be protected. Gray argues that a legally pluralistic system where collectives have autonomy is more serving to peace than its liberal alternatives. This study argues that Gray fails to achieve its goal of promoting diversity. This is due to the fact that Gray’s ...
Cosmopolitanism and nationalism in a globalized world
Yegenoglu, M (Informa UK Limited, 2005-01-01)
The disenfranchised subaltern groups of the South disappear from the current Anglo-American cultural studies discourse on globalization as their conditions are made synonymous with the diasporas in the First World centres. However, if we do not take the metropolitan situation as the sole important site of transnationality, but turn our attention to the lives of subaltern groups in the South we will gather a different picture of globalization. The essay discusses the various ways in which cosmopolitanism is ...

Carnivalization of gender hierarchies and the body in Virginia Woolf’s fiction
Yılmaz, Victoria Bilge; Öztabak Avcı, Elif; Department of English Literature (2016)
Virginia Woolf is a leading figure in feminist literature and criticism. Woolf’s novels constitute the main channel through which her feminist ideas are expressed. The Voyage Out (1915), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928) and Flush (1933) are the novels through which it is possible to see how Woolf sabotages the notions of stability and certainty, on which patriarchal ideology rests. Woolf’s characters wrestle with the so-called domestic sphere in which women are entrapped to serve men, reveal the wea...
