Antimicrobial aptamers for detection and inhibition of microbial pathogen growth
Ozalp, Veli Cengiz; Bilecen, Kivanc; Kavruk, Murat; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni (Future Medicine Ltd, 2013-03-01)
Discovery of alternative sources of antimicrobial agents are essential in the ongoing battle against microbial pathogens. Legislative and scientific challenges considerably hinder the discovery and use of new antimicrobial drugs, and new approaches are in urgent demand. On the other hand, rapid, specific and sensitive detection of airborne pathogens is becoming increasingly critical for public health. In this respect affinity oligonucleotides, aptamers, provide unique opportunities for the development of na...
Antimicrobial properties of 3D printed silver nanowire/polylactide nanocomposites
Bayraktar, İpek; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Kaynak, Cevdet; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2018)
Silver nanowire (Ag NW) loaded polylactide (PLA) nanocomposites were fabricated by simple solution mixing method and then 3D printed to obtain desired shapes. Morphological analysis, thermal analysis and antimicrobial performances of the fabricated nanocomposites with the addition of NWs were investigated. NWs showed good dispersion within the PLA matrix. Antibacterial properties of Ag NW/PLA nanocomposites were investigated against different standard bacterial strains of American Type Culture Collection (A...
ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF TITANIUM NANOPARTICLES
ERDURAL, B. K.; YURUM, A.; BAKIR, U.; Karakaş, Gürkan (2007-06-15)
In the present study, nanostructured titania particles were synthesized using hydrothermal processing and their photocatalytic antimicrobial activities were characterized. Sol-gel synthesized TiO2 samples were treated with a two step hydrothermal treatment. The first stage treatment was the alkaline treatment with 10 M of NaOH for 48 h at 130 degrees C, followed with the second step which applied with distilled water for 48 h at 200 degrees C. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images showed that alkaline t...
Antibiotic loaded nanocapsules functionalized with aptamer gates for targeted destruction of pathogens
Kavruk, M.; ÇELİKBIÇAK, ÖMÜR; Ozalp, V. C.; Borsa, B. A.; Hernandez, F. J.; BAYRAMOĞLU, GÜLAY; SALİH, BEKİR; ARICA, MEHMET YAKUP (2015-01-01)
In this study, we designed aptamer-gated nanocapsules for the specific targeting of cargo to bacteria with controlled release of antibiotics based on aptamer-receptor interactions. Aptamer-gates caused a specific decrease in minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of vancomycin for Staphylococcus aureus when mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were used for bacteria-targeted delivery.
Antibacterial Nanostructured Polyhydroxybutyrate Membranes for Guided Bone Regeneration
Karahaliloglu, Zeynep; Ercan, Batur; Taylor, Erik N.; Chung, Stanley; DENKBAŞ, EMİR BAKİ; Webster, Thomas J. (2015-12-01)
The principle of guided bone regeneration (GBR) in orthopedic, cranio-maxillofacial and dental tissue engineering applications is to create a secluded space for the treatment of large bone defects while excluding fibrous connective tissue formation at the defect area. In dental surgeries, a GBR membrane is placed near the dental implant in post-extraction sockets to grow new bone at the implant site, along with inhibiting infection due to the microbial nature of the mouth flora. Poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyric ac...
