Designing Social Cues for Collaborative Robots: The Role of Gaze and Breathing in Human-Robot Collaboration
Terzioglu, Yunus; Mutlu, Bilge; Şahin, Erol (2020-01-01)
In this paper, we investigate how collaborative robots, or cobots, typically composed of a robotic arm and a gripper carrying out manipulation tasks alongside human coworkers, can be enhanced with HRI capabilities by applying ideas and principles from character animation. To this end, we modified the appearance and behaviors of a cobot, with minimal impact on its functionality and performance, and studied the extent to which these modifications improved its communication with and perceptions by human collab...
DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXTENSIBLE HETEROGENEOUS SWARM ROBOT PLATFORM
Bilaloğlu, Cem; Turgut, Ali Emre; Şahin, Erol; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2022-1-13)
This thesis introduces Kobot -- an extensible heterogeneous swarm robot platform. Kobot platform uses a common hardware and software architecture based on off-the-shelf components, 3-D printing, and open-source software that evolves with state of the art. Robots built using this common architecture range from wheeled to flying robots and formed a heterogeneous swarm. The common architecture enabled developing and testing systems for the lightweight flying robots on resourceful ground robots. As a result, Ko...
The learning and use of traversability affordance using range images on a mobile robot
Ugur, Emre; Dogar, Mehmet R.; Cakmak, Maya; Şahin, Erol (2007-04-14)
We are interested in how the concept of affordances can affect our view to autonomous robot control, and how the results obtained from autonomous robotics can be reflected back upon the discussion and studies on the concept of affordances. In this paper, we studied how a mobile robot, equipped with a 3D laser scanner, can learn to perceive the traversability affordance and use it to wander in a room filled with spheres, cylinders and boxes. The results showed that after learning, the robot can wander around...
Assessing the integration of historical stratification with the current context in multi-layered towns. case study: Amasya
Etyemez, Leyla; Bilgin Altınöz, Ayşe Güliz; Department of Architecture (2011)
The major subject of this study is the multi-layered historical towns which are the outcome of continuous inhabitation process. This continuous inhabitation is reflected in the current town by the physical remains belonging to different periods. These remaining elements of the past periods can be conserved, as long as they become an integral part of the current urban context. Thus, sustaining the multi-layeredness requires sustaining the integration of the remaining elements of the former periods with the c...
An approach for conservation of railway heritage; assessing and experiencing the İzmir-Aydın railway line
Köşgeroğlu, Fahrettin Emrah; Şahin Güçhan, Neriman; Department of Architecture (2005)
The aim of this thesis is to prepare a conservation project proposal for the first railway line in Anatolia which is the İzmir ا Aydın Railway Line constructed between 1856 and 1866. The historical, political and social background is included in to the subject as well as the recent international debates on railway heritage conservation which provides main frame for the thesis. Here, the problems regarding the Anatolian railway heritage will be defined and to develop a framework for the necessary conservatio...
