The debate among libertarians and welfare advocates in contemporary literature revolves around the distinction between positive and negative rights or the question of whether such a distinction can be made. This article defends two main theses relating to this topic: (1) In order to prevent "rights inflation" and to prevent the state or various other institutions from gaining too much control over the individual, basic rights must be limited to negative rights. (2) The right to property should be examined by returning to its basis in labor.
