This study investigates grain size distribution along the shoreline of Büyük Menderes delta located in western Turkey, south of Dilek Peninsula. A total of 102 sand samples are collected at 71 localities within a length of about 20 km in the summer of 2004. Approximately half a kg of sand has been sampled with precise GPS locations. The samples are sieved using standard grain-size classification schemes in laboratory. Grain size distributions are analyzed and necessary graphs for individual samples are prepared and plotted over QuickBird satellite image of the same month in order to visualize the sampling environment. The 1 %, 5 %, 16 %, 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, 84 %, 95 %, mean, median, skewness and kurtosis values are calculated from the cumulative curves of the analyses. Interpretation of the results reveals following conclusions: Active delta head is represented by medium sand which is the coarsest sediment throughout the shoreline. On the other hand, the finest sediment (fine to very fine sand) is observed in the northern margin of the delta plain that corresponds to the southern shores of Dilek peninsula. Remaining areas are characterized by fine sand sediments. Sudden changes in the grain size are detected where significant shorelines changes have occurred within the last fifty years such as closure of coastal inlets.

Origin and significance of a quartz tourmaline breccia zone within the central anatolian crystalline complex, Turkey
Demirel, Serhat; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
The aim of this study is to investigate the petrography, geochemistry and evolution of quartz-tourmaline-rich rocks occurring in a wide breccia zone within the Late Cretaceous Kerkenez Granitoid (Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC), Turkey). The approximately 40-m wide main breccia zone has a NE-SW trend and is characterized by intense cataclastic deformation. The breccia zone can be traced several kilometers towards the west and generally occurs as tourmaline-filled faults and 1mm-30cm-thick veins...
Lithological and morphological control on the agricultural terraces in Bozburun Peninsula, Turkey
Satıcı, Selim; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geological Engineering (2013)
This study is carried out in Bozburun Peninsula where agricultural terraces exist. The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of lithology and morphology of the area on the distribution of terraces. The data used in the study is composed of necessary analog and digital topographic maps and geological maps which are revised by field data. Morphological settings of the regions, where terraces were placed, are classified into three types as coastal, valley and karstic. The methodology of the study c...
Microfacies analysis of upper devonian - lower carboniferous shallow water carbonates of the Yilanli formation in Zonguldak area, North Western, Turkey
Ahmed, Nouman; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Department of Geological Engineering (2016)
The Yılanlı Formation of Upper Devonian to Lower Carboniferous succession of the Zonguldak region were measured from Gökgöl section near Zonguldak city, NW Turkey. The studied section dominantly consists of limestone of grey – dark grey color with thin to thick beds of black shale and claystone. A variety of lithofacies identified in the studied section including limestone, dolomite, shale, claystone and mudstone. Nine microfacies are identified as grainstone, packstone, wackstone, mudstone, bindstone, ruds...
The Spider of an olive grove and associated shrublands in Muğla, Milas, Kıyıkışlacık with notes on their diversity and composition
Elverici, Mert; Kence, Aykut; Department of Biology (2012)
In the period from May 2010 to August 2011, spider fauna of semi natural olive groves and associated shrub-lands were sampled in Muğla Province, Milas District, Kıyıkışlacık Village at the Western Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Semiquantitative sampling protocols were performed by use of pitfall traps, sweep nets, by active collecting, by sifting of tree litter and beating branches of shrubs. A total of 9967 spider specimens were obtained, from these, 3034 adult specimens were determined up to the lowest ta...
Clay mineralogy and diagenesis of K-bentonites occuring in the devonian Yılanlı formation from North Western Anatolia (Bartın - Zonguldak)
Ünlüce, Özge; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Department of Geological Engineering (2013)
Yellowish brown and gray-green colored K-bentonite horizons revealing thicknesses up to 60 cm are exposed within the limestone-dolomitic limestone successions (Middle Devonian-Lower Carboniferous Yılanlı formation) deposited on a shallow marine carbonate platform at Zonguldak and Bartın area in the western Black Sea region. In this study, bentonite samples collected from two different locations; Gavurpınarı quarry and Yılanlı Burnu quarry are investigated by means of optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffrac...
