User requirements for analogical design support tools: Learning from practitioners of bio-inspired design
Töre Yargın, Gülşen; Crilly, Nathan (Elsevier BV, 2018-09-01)
When designers develop biologically-inspired design (BID) solutions, they are engaging in a process of analogical design. Software tools have been developed to support analogical design processes, presenting designers with information to help in the construction of useful analogies. However, the requirements for such tools have not been explicitly informed by accounts of practitioners' experiences. To address this, interviews were conducted with 14 expert practitioners in BID to understand how they find and...
User workshops: a method for eliciting user needs
Töre Yargın, Gülşen; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma (2006)
In many of the design cases designers may not have the required knowledge about users’ needs, and it may be difficult to empathize with users. In order to meet the needs of users, designers should gain knowledge about them, and users can be consulted to elicit their tangible and emotional needs. However the users may have difficulties in expressing their needs or they may not be aware of them. This paper presents a method called user workshops, which investigates tangible and emotional user needs by letting...
User evaluation of HCI concepts for defining product form
Şener Pedgley, Bahar (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-01)
A complaint amongst industrial designers is that the human-computer interaction (HCI) of computer-aided design (CAD) systems does not fit their needs for defining product form. This paper disseminates research to identify and address the shortfalls. A strengths and weaknesses analysis of three modelling media (foam, CAD, FreeForm((R))) is reported and used to influence the design of 11 novel HCI concepts for form creation. Expert users are found to prefer 'virtual workshop' and 'intelligent environment' con...
RIGOUR AND RELEVANCE IN USER EXPERIENCE RESEARCH: INVESTIGATING THE PRACTICES OF UX TEAMS AND FIRMS IN REMOTE RESEARCH CONTEXT
Danış, Semih; Töre Yargın, Gülşen; Süner-Pla-Cerdà, Sedef; Department of Industrial Design (2023-2-15)
User Experience (UX) research is an essential part of the design process that supports design activities by providing relevant user knowledge. Building on this knowledge, UX designers aim to find design solutions to ill-defined design problems by using creative thinking and exploration methods. To provide reliable and valid results in this process, UX research should be conducted in a scientific and structured way, addressing both rigour (meticulousness of the research plan and process) and relevance (usefu...
A semantic discontinuity detection (SDD) method for comparing designers' product expressions with users' product impressions
Khalaj, Javad; Pedgley, Owaın Francıs (Elsevier BV, 2019-05-01)
Designers exert substantial effort to define an intended user experience (UX) for a product, service or system. However, discontinuities can arise when the actual UX of users differs from the design intent. This paper presents a `Semantic Discontinuity Detection' (SDD) method capable of locating discontinuities between (i) realized product semantics, based on users' initial visual impression of a product, and (ii) intended product semantics, based on the originating designer's visual product expression. The...
