Design optimization of tool extension components in machine tool assemblies based on the absorber effect between subcomponent modes
Tola, Hatice Elif; Özşahin, Orkun; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2022-9)
Regenerative vibrations, called chatter, are a major problem limits productivity due to poor surface finish, low material removal rates and decrease in life of machine tool and equipment. Stability lobe diagrams are graphs that give a stable cutting limit at a given spindle speed, developed by the researchers as a chatter prevention tool. Various methods have been investigated to increase the critical cutting limit and suppress the most flexible mode in the machine tool frequency response function(FRF). Tun...
Design improvement of a compressor bearing using an elastohydrodynamic lubrication model
Duyar, Mustafa; Dursunkaya, Zafer (2002-07-16)
Efficiency and reliability of reciprocating hermetic compressors are of increasing interest, due to stricter energy consumption regulations and customer demands. Optimization of bearing design is particularly important, since one of the main contributors to power loss materializes at the compressor bearings. After prolonged operation, there could be scoring, sometimes scuffing or seizure at the piston pin bearing, which results in a decrease in the efficiency and reliability of the compressor. In this study...
Design optimization in chemically reacting flows
Yumuşak, M.; Eyi, Sinan (2011-12-01)
The objective of this study is to develop a reliable and efficient design tool that can be used in chemically reacting flows. The flow analysis is based on axisymmetric Euler and the finite rate chemical reaction equations. These coupled equations are solved by using Newton's method. Both numerical and analytical methods are used to calculate Jacobian matrices. Sensitivities are evaluated by using adjoint method. The performance of the optimization method is demonstrated for a rocket motor nozzle design. © ...
Design optimization of an s-shaped subsonic intake using bayesian approach and bezier curves
Atasoy, Mete; Özyörük, Yusuf; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2022-5-26)
Engine is a prominent part for the systems of a cruise missile. Reliable and efficient engine performance significantly depends on the quality of the incoming airflow. In this thesis, the aerodynamic performance of a subsonic intake is improved by using open-source multi-task Bayesian optimization (MTBO) tool. The main difference of Bayesian approaches from other optimization methods is that it has information about all design space, along with the uncertainty value. The learning process in the Bayesian app...
Design Optimization of Variable Stiffness Composite Laminates Using Surrogate Models for Compliance and Buckling Load
İnci, Hasan; Kayran, Altan (2017-09-22)
Usage of composite materials in aerospace industry has never been so wide in our world. Starting from the development of composites, the analyses were only done for straight fiber composites. With the improved manufacturing capabilities, designers have the ability to design more complex shapes for composites, which allows more efficient structures. In the past two decades, variable stiffness (VS) composite laminates are introduced to the literature. Within these two decades, researchers working on VS concep...
