Characterisation of tool marks on cartridge cases by combining multiple images
Leloğlu, Uğur Murat (2012-10-01)
The characteristic marks left by firearms on cartridge cases (CCs) during firing are used by forensic experts to identify CCs fired from the same firearm; however, the nature of the tool marks on the CCs is not well understood. The objective of this study is to separate the tool marks i.e., the signal, from the background signal and the noise and thereby understand its peculiarities. To extract the signal, which is much weaker than the noise, second-order derivatives of three-dimensional images of the surfa...
Characterisation and mitigation of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the 2011 proton-proton run
Aad, G.; et. al. (IOP Publishing, 2013-07-01)
This paper presents a summary of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector and discusses methods to tag and remove background contaminated events in data. Trigger-rate based monitoring of beam-related backgrounds is presented. The correlations of backgrounds with machine conditions, such as residual pressure in the beam-pipe, are discussed. Results from dedicated beam-background simulations are shown, and their qualitative agreement with data is evaluated. Data taken during the passage of unpa...
Characterizing interwell connectivity in waterflooded reservoirs using data-driven and reduced-physics models: a comparative study
Artun, Emre (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2017-07-01)
Waterflooding is a significantly important process in the life of an oil field to sweep previously unrecovered oil between injection and production wells and maintain reservoir pressure at levels above the bubble-point pressure to prevent gas evolution from the oil phase. This is a critical reservoir management practice for optimum recovery from oil reservoirs. Optimizing water injection volumes and optimizing well locations are both critical reservoir engineering problems to address since water injection c...
Characterizing Mutational Signatures in Human Cancer Cell Lines Reveals Episodic APOBEC Mutagenesis
Petljak, Mia; et. al. (2019-03-01)
Multiple signatures of somatic mutations have been identified in cancer genomes. Exome sequences of 1,001 human cancer cell lines and 577 xenografts revealed most common mutational signatures, indicating past activity of the underlying processes, usually in appropriate cancer types. To investigate ongoing patterns of mutational-signature generation, cell lines were cultured for extended periods and subsequently DNA sequenced. Signatures of discontinued exposures, including tobacco smoke and ultraviolet ligh...
Characterisation of the genetically modified cytochrome systems and their application to biohydrogen production in rhodobacter capsulatus
Öztürk, Yavuz; Yücel, Ayşe Meral; Department of Biotechnology (2005)
Facultative phototrophic bacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus has two c-type electron carrier cytochromes (cyt); the soluble cyt c2 and the membrane-attached cyt cy, that act as electron carriers during respiratory and photosynthetic growth of this species. Previously, a soluble form of cyt cy was constructed by fusing genetically the signal sequence of cyt c2 to the cyt c domain of cyt cy. The obtained novel soluble cyt cy (cyt S-cy) was unable to support photosynthetic growth of R. capsulatus but yielded phot...
