Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis for Reuse of Indigo Dye Rinsing Waters
Uzal, Nigmet; Yılmaz, Levent; Yetiş, Ülkü (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
A membrane based treatment strategy was developed for the possible recycling of rinsing wastewater from indigo dyeing to the process itself. Performances of three different nanofiltration (NF) (NF 270 and NF 90, Dow Film Tech, USA and NF 99, Alfa Laval, Denmark) and two different reverse osmosis (RO) (HR 98 PP and CA 995 PE, Alfa Laval, Denmark) membranes were investigated with wastewater collected from the first post-rinsing tank of indigo dyeing process of a denim manufacturing plant. Dead-end microfiltra...
Nanocrystallization in marginal glass forming alloys
Demirtaş, Tuba; Kalay, Yunus Eren; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2013)
The marginal glass-forming alloys have attracted much attention due to unique products of devitrification with a very high number density of nuclei up to 10^23 m^-3. Among these alloy systems, utmost interest is given to Al-RE and Al-TM-RE alloys with excellent lightweight mechanical (fracture strength close to 1 GPa) and chemical properties attributed to the presence of an extremely high density of nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous matrix. Classical nucleation theory fails in explaining this abnormal n...
Nanopatterning of Collagen Scaffolds Improve the Mechanical Properties of Tissue Engineered Vascular Grafts
Zorlutuna, P.; Elsheikh, A.; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat (2009-04-01)
Tissue engineered constructs with cells growing in an organized manner have been shown to have improved mechanical properties. This can be especially important when constructing tissues that need to perform under load, such as cardiac and vascular tissue. Enhancement of mechanical properties of tissue engineered vascular grafts via orientation of smooth muscle cells by the help of topographical cues have not been reported yet. In the present study, collagen scaffolds with 650, 500, and 332.5 nm wide nanocha...
Nanowire-based multifunctional antireflection coatings for solar cells
Hiralal, Pritesh; Chien, Chihtao; Lal, Niraj N.; Abeygunasekara, Waranatha; Kumar, Abhishek; Butt, Haider; Zhou, Hang; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Baumberg, Jeremy J.; Amaratunga, Gehan A. J. (2014-01-01)
Organic (P3HT/PCBM) solar cells are coated with ZnO nanowires as antireflection coatings and show up to 36% enhancement in efficiency. The improvement is ascribed to an effective refractive index which results in Fabry-Perot absorption bands which match the polymer band-gap. The effect is particularly pronounced at high light incidence angles. Simultaneously, the coating is used as a UV-barrier, demonstrating a 50% reduction in the rate of degradation of the polymers under accelerated lifetime testing. The ...
Nanostructured anti-bacterial poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid films for skin tissue engineering applications
Karahaliloglu, Zeynep; Ercan, Batur; Chung, Stanley; Taylor, Erik; DENKBAŞ, EMİR BAKİ; Webster, Thomas J. (Wiley, 2014-12-01)
Major issues faced with the use of today's skin grafts are infection, scar tissue formation, insufficient keratinocyte (or skin producing cells) proliferation and high production costs. To overcome these limitations, we propose here for the first time, a nanofeatured poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) membrane as a next generation antibacterial skin graft material. An alkaline surface treatment method was used to create random nanofeatures on PLGA membranes where sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration and exp...
