Eutrophication of the Izmit bay, Marmara Sea
MORKOÇ, ENİS; Tuğrul, Süleyman; OKAY, OYA; Legovic, T (1997-04-01)
The elongated Bay of Izmit is one of the most heavily polluted semienclosed basins in Turkey. From systematic data obtained during field studies between 1984 and 1988, it is clear that two distinct water masses are present throughout the year. The brackish water which originated in the Black Sea forms a 10 to 15 m thick surface layer. Its salinity and temperature vary from 22-24 ppt and 20-24 degrees C in summer, to 26 ppt and 7 degrees C, in winter. Marine water, which arrived from the Mediterranean, under...
MICROPLASTIC POLLUTION IN SEAWATER, SEDIMENT AND GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT OF FISHES OF THE NORTH-EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN SEA
Gökdağ, Kerem; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2017-12-28)
Marine litter and microplastic pollution is a growing problem for the world and Turkish seas. In this study, the levels of microplastics in surface water, water column, sediment as well as in fish digestive system from the northeastern Mediterranean Sea were studied in 2015 and 2016. The impact of virgin microplastics on seabream juveniles was also investigated at the laboratory. Number of microplastics in surface water were between 16339 and 520213 particles km-2 in 2015, and, between 39559 and 1043675 pa...
Particulate and dissolved primary production along a pronounced hydrographic and trophic gradient (Turkish Straits System-NE Aegean Sea)
Lagaria, A.; Psarra, S.; Gogou, A.; Tuğrul, Selen; Christaki, U. (Elsevier BV, 2013-06-01)
The rates of particulate (PPp) and dissolved primary production (PPd) were estimated along a trajectory of variable environmental regimes formed in a narrow shelf area, following the course of Black Sea water masses (BSW) passing through the Turkish Straits System (TSS) into the NE Aegean Sea (BS-AS outflow). Seven stations in total were sampled, covering a transect from the eastern edge of the Marmara Sea basin to the NE Aegean Sea, during two consecutive cruises performed in October 2008 within the framew...
Hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the Güzelyurt grounwater basin (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus)

Ecogeochemical fate of coarse organic particles in sediments of the Rhone River prodelta
CHARLES, Francois; COSTON-GUARİNİ, Jennifer; LANTOİNE, Francois; Guarini, Jean-Marc; Yücel, Mustafa (2014-03-20)
Coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) represents a small portion of the inner shelf sediments but occurs across all river outlets. To consider the ecogeochemical fate of CPOM in such an environment, we examined both the infauna community and secondary evidence of geochemical reactions preserved in the surface sediments of the Rhone prodelta. ICP-AES, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry of the CPOM showed that the fate of organic matter in this environment is driven by su...
