Effect of Flow Rate Controllers and their Opening Levels on Liquid Steel Flow in Continuous Casting Mold
Gursoy, Kadir Ali; Yavuz, Mehmet Metin (2016-01-01)
The present study investigates the mold flow structure at constant throughput condition for different slide-gate and stopper rod openings by utilizing computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling. Detailed validation of the CFD models are conducted using available experimental data and the performances of three different turbulence models, standard k-epsilon, realizable k-epsilon and k-omega SST are compared. The constant throughput casting operations for different slide-gate and stopper rod controller openin...
Effect of Downstream Channel Slope on Numerical Modeling of Dam Break Induced Flows
Dinçer, Ali Ersin; Bozkuş, Zafer; Şahin, Ahmet Nazım (null; 2016-07-29)
In the present study, the numerical simulations of dam break induced flows are performed by using various models. The numerical models used in the study are laminar, large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations with k-ε turbulence model. In addition a recently developed Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code is also used to simulate dam break problem. For the validation of the numerical approaches, a recently published experimental study is used. In the experimental s...
Effect of geometry on the mechanisms for off-bottom solids suspension in a stirred tank
Ayrancı Tansık, İnci; Madej, Adam M.; Derksen, Jos J.; Nobes, David S.; Kresta, Suzanne M. (2012-09-10)
This paper probes solids suspension mechanisms in stirred tanks. The hypothesis is that at the point where solids are just suspended a critical flow condition exists close to the bottom of the tank for a fixed solids content and similar geometries. The critical flow condition may be dominated by the turbulence or by the mean flow. Two Lightnin A310 impellers with diameters of D=T/3 and D=T/2 were tested at varying off-bottom clearances. The mean and the turbulent fluctuating velocities close to the bottom o...
Effect of piezoceramic hysteresis in passive and hybrid structural acoustic control
Özer, Mehmet Bülent (null; 2001-09-12)
Structural acoustic control via passive and hybrid electrical shunting of a piezoceramic wafer bonded onto the surface of a simply supported plate is investigated with emphasis on modeling and understanding the effect of piezoceramic nonlinearity on system performance. A nonlinear rate-independent finite-dimension Ishlinskii hysteresis model is experimentally identified for the PZT wafer by itself and then integrated into the coupled dynamic equations of the overall system consisting of the plate and electr...
Effect of sodium carbonate on carbothermic formation of hexagonal boron nitride
Akyıldız, Uğur; Sevinç, Naci; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2010)
Effect of Na2CO3 on formation of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) by carbothermic method has been studied by subjecting B2O3-C and Na2CO3-added B2O3-C mixtures to N2 (g) atmosphere. Na2CO3 amount in the mixtures was changed in the range of 0-40 wt. %. Time and temperature were used as experimental variables. Reaction products were analyzed by XRD and scanning electron microscope. Na2CO3 was found to increase both the amount and the particle size of h-BN similar to CaCO3 [1]. Na2CO3 was found to be less effect...
